Across the United States, school districts large and small are realizing the benefits of building with LEED for Schools. Students, parents, teachers and community members are making the difference, by letting elected officials know they want their schools built green. Take Action

not so much an article as marketing for the usgbc. green schools are great, and we've been working hard with school districts to assure that they get high-performing, energy-efficient, daylit, and non-toxic schools, but without the additional cost and time required by participation in the leed process.
working on an elementary school renovation now that - if we were doing it according to leed points - would have made more sense as new construction. ironic, considering it's a perfectly good 50,000sf+ building and far fewer resources and energy will go into its renovation.
couldn't agree with you more, Steven. schools could do much better than LEED. the US could benefit from a national movement towards more efficient building practices. but for now, it seems like it will all have to start local.
but how much do these schools cost? most children in the United States are receiving excellent educations. Do you know how many children in the Middle East and Africa? More than half have little or no education. In 2001, it only cost one man $12,000 to build one school in Pakistan, where more than 300 children currently go to school. Think of how many more schools the U.S. could fund in Africa and the Middle East with the money that we would be using on these schools. We already have schools, so we would be wasting this perfectly good money on people that are already way above the education standards for the world. Give other children a chance to have what the children in the U.S. have. A chance to make something out of themselves. All they need is a school where they can learn how to become businessmen and women. These schools would also show the Middle East how much the U.S. cares about their children, so they would think differently of the U.S. and also these new schools would keep children from going to madrasas, where they learn to become terrorists and bomb the U.S. and kill lots of people. Just think of that. If we could build more schools in the Middle East, we would greatly reduce the amount of terrorists. So think of all the children in the impoverished countries before we spend more money on the privileged children in the U.S. BUILD MORE SCHOOLS FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE!!!!!!!
