Christian Unverzagt (SCI-Arc), Chris Benfield (Cranbrook) and the team at M1/DTW have launched a brand new website as of 00:00 hour today. Five years/24 projects from possibly the most interesting firm in the midwest.

I consider their work very much a one-liner. I think they produce great work, but it all reads the same, literally. A very minimalist approach to graphic design and interior architecture. It is admirable work but how can you consider them the most interesting in the Midwest. Other UMich faculty besides Christian could be considered much more interesting. PLY Architecture for example, very innovative intersting when it comes to fabrication and production. How are you defining interesting?
Maybe "one of the smartest firms" would have been a better choice. Either way, what makes them so interesting to me is how how the theory, process and product are inseparable, and how complex and unique solutions are executed with subtlety and clarity. Many work this way, but very few do it so well.
(And yes, PLY is awesome.)
as with all web sites, i spent about 60 seconds there. it was a rich 60 seconds. i trust it's good stuff. to earn trust in 60 seconds is quite an acheivement.
