The eVolo publication on the future of the skyscraper is now available. An investigation by architects, students and designers. It contains the best 60 projects of the 06, 07, and 08 Skyscraper Competition.
I don't know if it's just me watching way too many movies (or myself), but the winner of 2008 reminds me a lot of looking down your body, your legs and ends with a pair of stiletto heels.
Having lived in lots of tiny spaces in New York City, I found most of the ideas honorable but impractical - almost to the degree of elitist impractical, i.e. a non-rectilinear space pretty much implies inefficient use of space (when you only have a 200sqft room), and the architect likely has to design the whole thing from the site to the door knob to make things fit.
Nevertheless, I see where these skyscrapers can fit best - a place where land value and construction cost is not an issue: A. Second Life, B. when we invent robotic construction techniques.
So I guess when we hit case B, we can say these designs are pretty revolutionary.
