is an online call to action to artists, designers, architects or other interested creative individuals or collaborators to propose concepts for the creation of memorials to the many thousands of Iraqi civilians killed in the War in Iraq. As of 2007, estimates range from 77,000 to over 655,000 deaths in Iraq of non-combatants as a consequence of “Operation Iraqi Freedom”. The memorial concepts will be featured in a growing online exhibition/database of proposals accessible on the site. Proposals are available to be viewed and rated by the public as well as by an internationally diverse group of individual scholars and curators who are serving as jurors. Deadline: March 19, 2008, the fifth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

I'm struck by the disparity in the number of estimated deaths, but I will hazard a guess and say that the 77,000 is that of the US government (liars). Also it's a little premature for a memorial don't you think? I'm sure there are many more civilians to die in this atrocity. Maybe we should focus our time and energies to ending this madness first.
do numbers really matter? can't the solution deal with the conceptual or even the nature of a
premature" memorial?
77,000 to over 655,000 is not an estimate - they just don't f'cking know. And I agree it may far too early to create a memorial worse that the war is still raging. And that said what about the other memorials for Cambodia, Sierra Leone, etc
sigh...bordering on the ridiculous
Maybe they should put the Sadam statue back up and go back to the way it was when everything was A-OK over there.
Do numbers really matter? Well, when each one of those numbers represents the life of an innocent man, women or child, yes I would say they matter a great deal! Perhaps if those numbers were of our family members they would matter just a wee bit more! Hell, I like to conceptualize and muse as much as the next guy, but not when people are dying daily at the hands of my government.
perhaps my point sailed over your head? 1 by the hands of our military is too much.
it's a competition, so perhaps the idea of a competition for a memorial to a people that are still dying is premature, but it is an attempt by some to put address the nature of memorial in an ongoing conflict, so by that alone, i am intrigued.
No at all, your point is taken. It's just that the past six years have filled me with a sense of anxiety, and urgency, I can no longer mask. And as a result my priorities have shifted from things like, the nature of a memorial to, how do we stop this guy from killing that guy. I also said at the hands of my government, not the military. I'll give you the last word, and have a good day.
