Following our previous look at an opening for a Director of Architectural Design at Palisociety, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Design & Construction Manager at the Eames Institute.
The role, based in Richmond, CA, calls for an individual to “ensure success across various planning, construction, landscape, and infrastructure projects.” The successful candidate will be responsible first and foremost for the design and construction management of the institute’s Richmond location, including a workspace, warehouse for the Eames Archives, and several spaces for public programming.
Why the role interests us
The open role at the Eames Institute offers us the opportunity to profile an organization dedicated to awareness of two of the most well-known historical figures in architecture and design: Ray and Charles Eames. A nonprofit public charity, the institute contains cast collections, digital and print offerings, an extensive program of events, and the Eames Ranch, serving to “demonstrate the enduring value of the Eameses’ philosophy and inspire joyful, problem-solving design.”
“With infinite curiosity for the world around them, Ray and Charles approached their work as an ongoing series of discoveries to develop solutions for any given problem,” the institute says about the duo. “Their approach was driven by curiosity, enacted with rigor, and expressed with joy and one we believe remains hugely relevant today.”
In August of this year, our news team published initial photos of the institute’s new workspace in Richmond, which “provides learning opportunities with expanded work environments for its staff members.” The project included the gut renovation of an original Jim Jennings commercial design from 1997, creating a lower 2,755-square-foot first-floor workspace and the larger, 4,739-square-foot second floor for offices.
In February, meanwhile, the institute shared news of its arrival in its new permanent San Francisco Bay Area home, consolidating its archival collection under one roof for the first time. Among the objects on display to the public in the space is the Airplane Stabilizer concept created for the U.S. Navy using the plywood molding method that was first invented for use as a combat field splint by Charles following his own bout with a broken femur.
