Following our previous look at an opening for a Transportation Project Manager at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Director of Architectural Design at Palisociety.
The role, based in Los Angeles, calls for an individual with hospitality design experience to “lead a growing team of design project managers in the production of relevant documentation to execute design at a high level.” Among the tasks and responsibilities for the role will be the hands-on creation of full drawing sets with specifications as well as the management of design team members. “Technical skills, passion, speed & efficiency, diligent attention to detail, and elevated taste level are a must,” the company adds.
Why the role interests us
The open role at Palisociety offers us the opportunity to explore the design approach behind Palisociety’s bespoke hotels and residences. Founded by Avi Brosh in 2007, the company focuses on creating distinctive, neighborhood-centric hotels and residences that do not exceed 150 rooms. The company’s hotels operate under five distinct monikers: Palihouse, Palihotel, Le Petit Pali, ARRIVE by Palisociety, and a collection of independently branded properties.
Palisociety’s hotels are spread across the U.S. but are particularly concentrated in southern California. The company describes its “timeless” design aesthetic as speaking to “classic European hospitality with a quintessentially Californian point of view.”
For the Palihouse West Hollywood which opened in 2022, Brosh is quoted in The New York Times as saying ‘We didn’t want to craft a space that takes itself too seriously.” The 95-room hotel is set within a former 1980s apartment building, with a stark original exterior on West Third Street complemented by what the NYT called “an eclectic, layered interior, taking cues from playful California luxury and the unpredictable charm of a stylish European inn.”
Meanwhile, the Palihouse Santa Barbara comprises 24 rooms set around a Mediterranean-style courtyard. “Our design is best described as Vintage Preppy meets American-Riviera, featuring a spirited romantic twist and plentiful ‘Palisociety’ flair,” the company says. “Interiors reflect our penchant for mix-matched furnishings consisting of highly-curated new and vintage pieces and special unexpected touches throughout.”
