Following our previous visit to DLR Group, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to San Francisco this week to explore the work of BCV Architecture + Interiors.
Based between San Francisco and New York, the firm has built a portfolio spanning residential, hospitality, commercial, and civic/cultural projects. Describing its approach, the firm says it “strives to produce work that is simple, elegant and timeless; an efficient expression of design that shows a sense of restraint and transcends trends.”
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for several positions to join their San Francisco team. For candidates interested in applying for a position or anybody interested in learning more about the firm’s output, we have rounded up three timber interiors by BCV that exemplify the firm’s ethos.
A ski-in/ski-out residence in California’s Sugar Bowl Resort, the Crow’s Nest Residence rises three stories and measures 5,600 square feet. Outside, a board-formed concrete podium anchors the cabin on the hillside, from which a steel, glass, and timber structure rises above the snow line. The residence is positioned to take advantage of panoramic views of the ski landscape as well as direct access to nearby ski lifts.
“A double-height living room sits at the center of the home, and features large south-facing windows, a grand stone fireplace, and log columns that reinforce this cabin’s place among a cathedral of trees,” the firm notes. “The year-round south-facing deck features a hot tub, fire pit, and outdoor dining table for slope-side family lunches.”
Located within San Francisco’s Four Seasons hotel on Yerba Buena Street, the Press Club is a 9,000-square-foot venue functioning as an urban tasting room. From the outside, the venue’s entry-level retail display entices the visitor to browse inside, before revealing a grand staircase to a subterranean level tasting lounge.
“The palette of materials mixes warm, sustainably sourced woods with exposed structural elements, suggesting the partnership of the organic and the industrial that is the hallmark of wine country,” the firm explains. “Wine bottles themselves are used in innovative displays that bring color and light to the space.”
For the Joseph Phelps Vineyards, BCV re-imagined an original winery building designed by John Marsh Davis. The new venue features a variety of tasting rooms, new culinary facilities, and an improved connection to the surrounding landscape.
“In keeping with Joseph Phelps’ ongoing vision, the project increases the Winery’s ability to host visitors, expands its food program, and provides offices for staff on a new second floor carved out of the original building,” the firm adds. “The new program utilizes approximately 17,000 sq. ft. of the existing 35,000 sq. ft. building, restoring key elements of the original design, upgrading seismic, mechanical, and access to modern codes while preserving space for future expansion by the next generation of the Phelps family.”
