Following last week’s visit to Seattle’s LMN Architects, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series across the border to Toronto, Canada, where we find high-end designers Yabu Pushelberg.
Founded in 1980 in Ontario by business and life partners George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg, the firm has grown over three decades from its interior design routes to now encompass carefully crafted architecture, interiors, landscapes, lighting, products, graphics and branding.
Now counting over one hundred members across their Toronto and New York offices, the firm is currently hiring for a Senior Interior Designer position on Archinect Jobs.
For the firm’s founders, Yabu Pushelberg’s origin in interior design was crucial for teaching them about the importance of environments. Today, this value has been translated across high-end hospitality and retail design projects, with the added emphasis of infusing stories and emotions through their work.
“As a narrative-based practice, it was natural for our storytelling to take on new sensibilities,” the firm says. “Storytelling is the heartbeat to our studio. To craft experiences that resonate, our work is informed by the way individuals choose to see and experience the world.”
Within their studios, the practice places an emphasis on collective design and a thought process that moves between the rational and intuitive. Through this, the firm delivers work they describe as “imaginative, thoughtful, and honest.”
“It is this interchangeability of their individual roles, that in unison, is distinctive,” the firm says. “Our projects stand as tribute to our practices coming together to craft cohesive experiences that resonates with our clients. In our view, it is the only way we can truly make moments matter.”
Among the projects accumulated by the firm over four decades are Michelin-start restaurants, bespoke retail and cultural projects, leading hotel and resort brands, and creative individuals who approach the firm with the goal of “looking to stand apart from the crowd.”
Last year, we covered the firm’s collaboration with SANAA on a bespoke restored department store in Paris beneath a rippling glass façade, as well as their collaboration with Kengo Kuma and others on a miniature home series called ‘The Village’.
The firm’s work has also translated into numerous awards, including an appointment as Officers of the Order of Canada, an induction into the Interior Design Hall of Fame, and listings among the world’s most influential design studios by Wallpaper*, Elle Décor, Hospitality Design, and Business of Fashion.
“George and Glenn's partnership is peerless, and their innate creative abilities have made them thought leaders in the design world,” the firm says. “Dedicated to delivering the unexpected, they constantly shift visual paradigms with each completed project, the end result eliciting an emotional resonance in the user.”
