Following our previous look at an opening for a Store Planning Designer at Kering Beauté, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Transportation Project Manager at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
The role, based in New York, calls for an individual to serve as a project team leader for the firm’s transportation and aviation projects, as well as serving as a client point of contact. While potentially encompassing a broad transport portfolio, the role will focus particularly on aviation projects “including all aspects of terminal building planning and design including airside, landside and the various specialties such as baggage handling and airport systems, needed to deliver terminal development programs.”
Why the role interests us
The open role at SOM offers us the opportunity to review the many aviation and transport projects by the firm which have been reported on by our editorial. Earlier this year, the firm announced plans for a new satellite concourse at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, working alongside Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects, and Arup. The scheme is set to become the first new building in the airport’s largest expansion in 68 years.
In January, meanwhile, SOM completed a new terminal at India’s Kempegowda International Airport. Described by the firm as a “terminal in a garden,” the scheme seeks to become a “serene multimodal transit hub that radically reimagines the airport experience.”
Beyond aviation, recent transport-related projects undertaken by SOM include a new bus shelter design for Los Angeles, of which 3,000 are expected to be installed across the city in the next decade. In January, the firm began work on a $550 million redevelopment of Gray 30th Street Station in Philadelphia while, in late 2023, the firm shared photos of their new Volpe National Transportation System Center in Cambridge, MA.
