Following our previous look at an opening for a Signage & Wayfinding Project Manager at Pentagram, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an opening on Archinect Jobs for the Exhibition Design Internship at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
The paid internship, based in New York City, runs from October 2024 to March 2025, with applications closing on Friday, July 5th. Twelve positions will be available across eight departments: Advancement, Culture and Inclusion, Curatorial, Education, Exhibition Design, Library and Archives, Social Media, and Publications. Applicants to the internship must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies, with priority given to rising juniors or seniors in undergraduate programs and to graduate students.
Why the role interests us
The internship at the Guggenheim offers us the opportunity to profile how designers at the beginning of their careers can find development opportunities within leading cultural institutions; a subject we also explored in a previous Job Highlights edition on a fellowship at MoMA PS1. In the Guggenheim’s case, the internship seeks to provide “practical training experience” to those pursuing careers in the arts and museum fields.
Under the supervision of permanent staff, the interns will gain a broad understanding of how a particular department functions within the context of a wider museum. Tasks and roles within the internship include working independently on projects, attending group meetings, participating in ongoing conversations and processes within the department, and attending Culture Seminars on the museum and wider issues and trends in the design field.
Beyond specific roles within the program, interns will likely experience a new side of the famous architectural landmark itself. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Guggenheim took 15 years to design and build before being completed in 1959. Over time, the bowl-shaped main gallery has been the subject of notable architectural exhibitions such as ‘Countryside: The Future and the Past’ by Rem Koolhaas and OMA and, just last month, the 1989 light projection by Jenny Holzer.
