A new statement written by the AIA’s Board of Trustees in response to the swirling controversy surrounding CEO Lakisha Ann Woods has reiterated their broadscale support amidst criticism about certain actions during her more than two-year tenure.
While the statement does not address specifically the claims that were put forth in last week's Bloomberg article concerning corporate misconduct and the letter circulating that was signed by 22 former AIA presidents, it did issue a number of salutary proclamations about her strategic endeavors and performance while in office. Woods joined the organization in 2022 after serving as the President and CEO of the National Institute of Building Sciences.
"Among the matters brought forward, the Board directed external counsel to review the planning and execution of the AIA Staff Learning Retreat that took place in March 2024," part of the statement read, referring to their decision to retain a local firm to conduct an independent inquiry into the claims about a $150,000+ trip to the Dominican Republic this winter.
"The review focused on the specific issues raised to the Board. That portion of the review has now concluded," it continues. "The Board has reviewed the facts, found and confirmed that there was no wrongdoing, and there is no action to be taken by the Board in connection to the staff retreat."
The other claims, which are multifaceted and include a newly-entered lawsuit by former Chief Council Terrance (Terry) Ona regarding retaliatory firing for his report on Woods' supposed abuse of office privileges, are more serious and will likely require further time to investigate. Neither Woods nor AIA President Kimberly Dowdell have yet to issue official statements in response to any points of the controversy.
A note about the FY 2025 budget being $13.5 million less than the previous year's is also included in the statement. The Board of Directors said finally that it is "proud to continue its ongoing support" for Woods' leadership. Archinect will share further updates if and when they become available.
