Following our previous visit to Oregon-based Waechter Architecture, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Connecticut this week to explore the work of Beinfield Architecture.
Founded in 1983 by Bruce Beinfield, with an office located in South Norwalk, CT, the firm has built a portfolio inspired by place, culture, and history. “We are dedicated to solving architectural problems innovatively with environmentally sustainable solutions that are simple and direct, expressive of structure and program, and supportive of the varied patterns of human life,” the firm says about its ethos. “We are committed to a vision of architecture and design that is at once responsive and imaginative, modern, yet respectful of tradition and context.”
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for an Intermediate Architect to join its South Norwalk office. For candidates interested in applying for the position, or anybody interested in learning more about the firm’s output, we have rounded up four projects by Beinfield Architecture that exemplify the firm’s ethos.
A luxury apartment community in Everett, MA, Pioneer saw a collaboration between five development and design firms. Beinfield Architecture carried out interior design roles for the project, seeking to “build a place where people can live, meet, and feel at home.”
“As the designers of the Amenity space we wanted to build a sense of wonder and excitement - communal areas that invite you to come inside and explore, where one area leads naturally into the next, offering glimpses of what’s hidden within,” the firm explains. “Modern design with wood planking and industrial touches, punctuated with charming accents: bright splashes of color, reclaimed wood features, even a canoe hanging from the rafters.”
Part of a wider development that will occupy a full city block close to New Haven Green, Audubon Phase 1 comprises 269 residential units and approximately 13,000 square feet of amenity space. The development will also include a 10,000-square-foot courtyard with a pool, along with a 6,000-square-foot roof deck.
“This building design had many goals including creating a residential oasis in this downtown area while responding to the different Architectural characters of the four streets the building faces,” the firm explains. “The amenities are comprehensive and in addition to the leasing center will include a golf simulator, music room, state of the art gym, co-working spaces as well as media and library rooms.”
Located on Chestnut Street in South Norwalk, Platform SoNo Station comprises 280 new residential units, 10,000 square feet of amenities, and a 17,000-square-foot landscaped plaza with a pool, outdoor grilling, and picnic areas. 100 residential units will also located at the entry of an adjacent train station, with the strategy for the wider development to transform the area on the east side of the train tracks into an “important place of arrival into the city, and an important transportation center for the region.”
“For transit-oriented development to thrive, the streets must be walkable, pedestrian friendly, and safe,” the team explains. “This project will dramatically improve Chestnut Street and the connectivity of the train station to the community it serves. The neighborhood currently has symptoms of urban blight, including dilapidated buildings and a history of violent crime, which have depressed new investments in the neighborhood. The investment of care and dollars that this project represents will address those symptoms, and enable much stronger connections between the train station and the surrounding neighborhoods.”
The Brim & Crown project saw the adaptive reuse of the Hat Corporation of America factory, dating from 1929, into residential use. The resulting scheme contains 42 residential units, offices, retail, a restaurant, and a coworking component. The raw industrial character of the original building is retained and celebrated through salvaged windows and exposed steel structures, while reclaimed wood flooring and raw steel sheets are used to clad feature walls. Perimeter walls were covered in a graffiti mural by the artist Jahmane to “provide color and vibrant contrast while remembering the building’s past lives.”
“The look and feel of the interior draws inspiration from depictions of the basement of the chateau in France where the Rolling Stones recorded their Exile of Main Street album,” the team explains. “The great room, illuminated by crystal chandeliers, becomes a great hang-out space by day and party space by night.”
