Following last week’s look at an opening for an Architect at the US Bureau of Reclamation, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for Curator of the Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University.
The role, based in the Harvard Graduate School of Design, calls for an individual to provide “vision and overall direction to the Loeb Fellowship program for mid-career professionals in design-related disciplines.” In addition to acting as principal spokesperson for the program, the curator will be expected to contribute to the wider GSD offering. Among the requirements for the role are a Bachelor’s degree and “proven curatorial, staff and program management, and/or development leadership in an educational/design setting including architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design or related field.”
Why the role interests us
The open role of curator of the Loeb Fellowship offers us the opportunity to reflect on a fellowship series that Archinect has frequently covered in recent years. Now entering its 54th cycle, the fellowship includes a one-year residency on the GSD’s campus. There, Fellows (often mid-career design individuals) engage in research, courses, and workshops on both the Harvard and MIT campuses, as well as participating in panels and conferences to further knowledge-sharing and expand their work through social engagement.
The specialties and geographies of fellows are often varied both within and across years. The 2024 cohort included nine fellows who spanned infrastructure, climate justice, land ownership, and journalism, hailing from the United States, Colombia, Norway, and South Africa. The 2023 class, meanwhile, spanned activism, horticulture, visual arts, and real estate development, hailing from Peru, the United States, Argentina, and Mongolia.
“When we make our selection in the spring, we already know these individuals are highly accomplished and show great promise for growing their influence,” outgoing Loeb Fellowship curator John Peterson said when the 2024 cohort was being announced last year. “Our work is to recognize the opportunity that educational experience and the catalyzing effect of being within the cohort are as vehicles for their potential."
