Following last week’s look at an opening for a Graphics/Multimedia Editor at The New York Times, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Physical Design + Fabrication Internship at VolvoxLabs.
The role, based in Brooklyn, NY, calls for an individual who is “passionate about technology-embedded installations, digital fabrication techniques, parametric design, and exploring new technologies in fabrication.” Among the qualifications sought after in internship applicants are basic digital fabrication knowledge and shop skills, alongside knowledge of 3D modeling software.
Why the role interests us
The open role at VolvoxLabs offers us the opportunity to explore the work of a studio grounded in the intersection between digital and physical space. With a team spanning artists and technologists, the studio has built a portfolio of contemporary art installations and immersive environments through a process that engages with video, lighting, architecture, and sound, for clients including Microsoft, Nike, and Gensler.
“Many VVOX projects merge digital media with physical construction to create totally immersive experiences,” the studio says about its approach. “Our physical processes combine computational design and robotic fabrication with traditional tools and techniques to create challenging structures, often curvaceously organic or ultra-faceted.”
Among the unique outputs from the firm is The Beach: Robotic Performance. Designed in collaboration with artist Roy Nachum, the project features a performance using an industrial robotic arm as a medium for a deeper artistic message. “Within this thoughtfully curated installation, the Robot seamlessly adopts the persona of the artist’s alter-ego, skillfully navigating through a diverse array of human emotions amidst the immersive presence of natural elements,” the studio explains.
Meanwhile, the studio’s collaborations with Microsoft include an overhaul of the Microsoft Theater Lounge in Los Angeles, where VolvoxLabs created four permanent art installations. Among the pieces on display are Momentum, a sculpture made of locally sourced ash wood inspired by the Microsoft logo, and Form, a 40-foot projection-mapped wall that captures people’s movement to transform it into “spontaneous interactive art.”
