Following last week’s look at an opening for a Construction Contract Administrator at EskewDumezRipple, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Graphics/Multimedia Editor at The New York Times.
The role, based in New York, calls for a “creative and versatile 3D specialist who can build, animate, style and render models for breaking news, enterprise and investigative projects.” Among the responsibilities for the role will be creating and building detailed and accurate 3D models, interviewing experts, and executing camera movements for 3D scenes. Qualifications required for the role include 3+ years of 3D modeling experience and expertise in at least one major 3D application.
Why the role interests us
The open role at The New York Times offers us the opportunity to explore how a prominent national and international media outlet utilizes architectural skills for its reporting and investigations. “The New York Times Graphics team has a small group of journalists focused on forensic analyses and reconstructions of news events, with 3D modeling at the core of these stories,” The New York Times told Archinect about the role.
“The 3D specialist who joins our team would build models from scratch, using a variety of reporting methods: open source visual evidence, architectural analysis of building plans, and interviews with experts,” the outlet told us about the role. “We’d love to work with someone who is creative, appreciates precision, and has experience in news graphics, engineering, architecture, or forensic reconstruction.”
In addition to the prevalence of architecture-based skills in the role, the team’s own investigations have previously overlapped with those reported on Archinect for their architectural significance. The Times Graphics team has previously undertaken an investigation into the causes of the collapse of Champlain Towers in Miami, which as we explored in our 2021 feature, “exposes a dehumanized mindset in the built environment.”
In 2022, meanwhile, the Times Graphics team published an investigation into a deadly fire that left 17 people dead in a Bronx apartment fire. At the time, a feature article in Archinect cited both the Bronx fire and fires in Philadelphia and Chicago as underscoring the lack of regulations, funding, and oversight evident in all cases exposed an attitude of indifference towards public and low-income housing in the United States.
