Following last week’s visit to Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to New York City this week to explore the work of Murdock Solon Architects.
From their studio in Chelsea, the firm has built a portfolio spanning retail, restaurants, schools, institutional, and residential buildings. “We feel that a successful architectural solution is the result of an efficiency of design that translates to all aspects of a project including space planning, specified materials, mechanical systems, and structural strategies,” the firm says about its philosophy. “Our approach is holistic in that all components are thoughtfully combined into a coherent whole that solves design problems the project sets out to address.”
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for an intermediate interior architect to join their New York studio. For candidates interested in applying for a position, or anybody interested in learning about the firm’s output, we have rounded up four New York residences by Murdock Solon Architects that exemplify the studio’s ethos.
Occupying an elevated site overlooking Block Island Sound, the Montauk Beach House was shaped with an aim to achieve “minimal impact on the pristine landscape, maximum exposure to the views, and all the amenities of a year-round vacation home.” The effects of sunlight, breezes, and views were considered in each room, with the house ultimately conceived as a “lens” that frames and magnifies subtle changes in the surrounding landscape.
“The L-shaped plan is divided into public and private wings,” the team explains. “Two indoor/outdoor zones on two levels define the public areas. The upstairs zone includes the kitchen, dining area, living area, and a deck. The downstairs public zone includes the family room, outdoor living room, pool, and sunbathing deck.”
The East Hampton Cottage comprises a 1,500-square-foot residence surrounded by dense native trees and greenery. Commissioned as a weekend home for a Manhattan couple, the home was designed to accommodate light-filled space to place an emphasis on the clients’ passion for mid-century furniture pieces.
“The interior showcases a simple, but elegant material palette, as well as exposed beams in a cathedral ceiling,” the firm explains. “Outside, a large double-thick, cedar-clad wall with a sliding barn entry gate provides privacy from the street, allowing undisturbed enjoyment of the pool and sun deck.”
For their Surfside residence, Murdock Solon was commissioned to complete the exterior and interior design for a home that stood prior as an unfinished building shell. Outside, the building shell was finished an an architectural language of vertical flat cedar siding, metal panels, and wooden rainscreen elements, chosen to “regularize the home’s facade” while protecting the home from seaside elements.
“The design approach conceives of the exterior and interior as a contiguous space to capitalize on the opportunity the site presents for outdoor living,” the team explains. “The architectural materials employed in the design of the facade described above weave the exterior seamlessly with the interior living spaces. As a result, the indoor and outdoor areas can be experienced simultaneously, allowing all family members to share a common space together even while engaged in different activities.”
Situated on a suburban New York plot, the Lakewood Residence was designed around the use of courtyards to create moments of privacy. The L-shaped plan of the 5,000-square-foot home facilitates both a public and private face for the residence, where a solid street-facing facade of zinc panels and white cementitious stucco is contrasted by an interior courtyard facade of ample glazing.
Inside, a feature staircase connects the ground floor living spaces with a cantilevered upper bedroom floor. Meanwhile, the kitchen and living spaces are designed to incorporate “faith-based living,” finished with timber fixtures and a bright, neutral color palette.
