Following last week’s look at an opening for a Studio Director at Doug Aitken Workshop, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Project Manager at Fluidity Design Consultants.
The role, based in Los Angeles, calls for an individual to “coordinate and manage the firm’s relationship as the sub-consultant to the prime design lead on projects.” Among the requirements for the role are a professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or design management, 3-7 years of professional experience, and a history of writing and reviewing design contracts.
Why the role interests us
The open role at Fluidity offers us the opportunity to highlight a firm specializing in water feature design and engineering that has previously been featured in our editorial. In August of last year, for instance, we reported on the firm’s collaboration with Sasaki Associates on the design of the largest public park in Athens, Greece, and the largest coastal park in Europe. Set to be fully completed by 2030, the park will incorporate leftover remnants from the 2002 Summer Olympics as well as Athens’ old international airport which closed in 2001.
In 2021, meanwhile, we spoke with Fluidity’s founding principal James Garland as part of our Studio Snapshot series. In the discussion, Garland reflected on the studio’s highly specialized design typology versus conventional architectural practice, as well as offering advice for early-career architects and reflecting on the studio’s own workplace ethos.
“We have an assertive design culture — based mostly on quite serious optic and aural analysis which overlaps with our architectural and urban design backgrounds, and we are working to mirror a similarly strong engineering culture,” Garland told us. “While design issues naturally take the lead to answer problems, we try to not let any idea stray far without enfolding engineering concerns. Quoting Miyazaki from 'The Wind Rises,' "Engineers make dreams into reality"; and of course, 'how' is a central ingredient in our work.”
