Swiss architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein has completed the new "Lindt Home of Chocolate" for Lindt & Sprüngli, the Swiss chocolatier founded in 1845. The new facility is located near Lake Zurich on the outskirts of Zurich and includes a factory, warehouses, an office building, and the new gateway to the Lindt Home of Chocolate, which is operated by the Lindt Chocolate Competence Foundation.
Moreover, the new Home of Chocolate features an interactive exhibition about chocolate, a research and development facility "for the future of chocolate recipes," a production plant, a chocolate shop, a cafe, and offices, all of which are interconnected by spiral stairways and dynamic walkways that span through an expansive atrium space.
The architecture sits as a simple industrial box. The facade consists primarily of red brick, playing off of the aesthetic of its surroundings. At the south-eastern corner is a cut-out that creates an imposing void to add a level of complexity and character to the massing. The atrium is 64 meters long, 15 meters high, and 13 meters wide.
Architect Emanuel Christ said in a statement: "Almost reaching an ancient Roman scale, we‘ve created an exaggeration of industrial production with a certain tension; a tension that gives a strong presence to the architecturally distinct elements that define the interior, bridging the substantial gap between a commercial ambiance and classical grandeur. To celebrate the experience of chocolate in many ways, we‘ve scripted the Lindt Home of Chocolate‘s interior as a space that orchestrates the movement of people."
