Following last week’s look at an opening for a Construction Manager at Skystone Foundation, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an opportunity on Archinect Jobs for a Junior Architectural Engineer at Cover.
The role, based in Los Angeles, calls for an individual who will sit “at the center of innovation, bringing groundbreaking architectural vision to a future with abundant housing for all.” Among the requirements for the position are a degree in architecture, architectural engineering, or similar from an NAAB-accredited program and proficiency in tools such as Rhino, 3D Studio Max, VRay, and Photoshop.
Why the role interests us
The latest opening at Cover offers us the opportunity to explore the background of a firm that spoke with Archinect in 2021 on its creation and ethos. Founded in 2014 by Cooper Union graduates Alexis Rivas and Jemuel Joseph, the company describes itself as one that offers “a turnkey solution for building homes that leverages the power of computational design and precision manufacturing to deliver homes of unprecedented quality.”
“Home-building is slow, expensive, unpredictable, and usually low quality,” the duo told us in the 2021 interview. “At Cover, our mission is to make thoughtfully designed and well-built homes for everyone. Homes that improve people's daily lives, reflect our modern way of living, embrace progress, and are uncompromising in their design and performance.”
The company’s work is one of several affordable housing solutions and experiments recently featured in our editorial. Last week, we covered news of a Japanese company that is aiming to develop 3D printed homes “bought for the price of a car,” while Los Angeles officials recently moved to exempt affordable developments from the Site Plan Review process in order to accelerate residential deliveries.
In New York, Governor Hochul recently announced affordable housing plans for KPF’s 5 World Trade Center, while the city’s first geothermal apartment complex topped out in Coney Island. Amidst these developments, however, it was reported that the city approved zero new housing starts for Manhattan in July despite considerable demand, while in May, the city’s housing chief resigned amid concurrent homelessness and affordability crises.
