Following last week’s visit to California-based Bergmeyer, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to New York this week to explore the work of 1100 Architect.
Founded in 1983, and operating across New York and the German city of Frankfurt am Main, the 60-person studio has built a portfolio spanning architecture, interiors, urban design, and master planning. “We design buildings—each one, unique—that are deeply rooted in a sense of place,” the practice says about their approach. ”In ways both quantitative and qualitative, we carefully evaluate each site, resulting in buildings that are intrinsic to their place, environmentally appropriate, and responsive to existing and historical context.”
Over on Archinect Jobs, they are currently hiring a Senior Project Architect. For candidates interested in applying for the position, or anybody interested in learning more about the studio’s work, we have rounded up five renovation and expansion projects by 1100 Architect that demonstrate their design approach.
In Santa Monica, 1100 reimagined two former auto shops as a collaborative workspace for Brand New School, an advertising and interactive media studio. The layout, inspired by the company’s New York branch, strategically places open workstations for the production team in a central area, while semi-private, glass-enclosed offices for creative directors are situated at the perimeter. The glass partitions deliver an acoustical separation, maintaining a balanced environment that promotes visual communication.
The space also includes breakout areas and lounges interspersed throughout, promoting a culture of teamwork and collaboration. In addition, enclosed conference rooms offer privacy when necessary, supporting a multifaceted work environment.
A public facility offering health and wellness services on the Upper West Side, Riverside Health Center underwent a major renovation and expansion to revamp the existing mid-century building into a dynamic, high-performing community hub with modernized facilities and sustainable systems. Considerations in the brief included enhancing the center's circulation, daylighting, and accessibility while introducing eco-friendly HVAC systems, thereby aligning the health center with contemporary standards. The resulting remodel earned the facility a LEED Gold Certification.
New features include a demonstration kitchen and a flexible classroom space, transforming the center into an active community hub. In collaboration with artist Richard Artschwager, and as part of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs' Percent for Art Program, 1100 integrated an orange-glazed terracotta-tile installation across the building.
Located at the heart of the University of Pennsylvania campus, Perry World House is described as a “new center for global engagement.” The project integrates a preserved section of a historical 1851 house with a contemporary limestone-clad structure, creating a 17,400-square-foot facility.
The center’s interior holds versatile spaces that accommodate classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, and common areas, all designed to foster student interaction and multi-disciplinary exchange. The anchor of the scheme is the World Forum, a multi-use, atrium-like event space enclosed by glass, designed to host seminars, lectures, and special events.
Located near Frankfurt's East Harbor, the mixed-use East Side Lofts blends historical and modern architecture in a rapidly evolving neighborhood. The project comprises two segments: the refurbishment of an unfinished neoclassical structure left unfinished since World War I, and a contemporary expansion designed to complement the original structure.
The modern expansion references the volume, rhythm, and proportions of the original building, yet while distinguishing itself as a modern interpretation using new materials. The renovation also preserved selected historical elements such as timber beams, creating up-to-date living spaces that resonate with the building's history.
Situated in a pre-war building, three individual apartments have been integrated into a modern, seamless triplex. Employing “refined details and a restrained color palette,” the renovation creates a “minimalist character” featuring concealed light fixtures and an absence of hardware.
Prominent elements include a wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinets extending through the living room and kitchen, binding the residence together while maintaining the distinctive essence of each room. While the initial renovation into a duplex was executed in 2002, a subsequent expansion took place in 2008 when the client procured an additional apartment above the existing duplex, enabling its transformation into a guest suite and workspace.
