For Riverside Health Center, a public building that provides health and wellness services to members of the Upper West Side community, 1100 Architect designed a renovation and expansion, transforming what had become a crumbling mid-century structure into a highly-performing and vibrant community anchor. The design improved circulation, daylight, accessibility and replaced the building’s outdated HVAC systems with more sustainable alternatives, bringing the health center up to 21st-century standards and earning it a LEED Gold Certification. It also added new programming such as a demonstration kitchen and flexible classroom space, making it a bustling hub of activity. As part of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program, 1100 Architect collaborated with artist Richard Artschwager on an orange-glazed terracotta-tile installation on several of the building’s surfaces, increasing the building’s visibility and positioning it as a beacon in the neighborhood.
