Following last week’s look at an opening for a Senior Planner at the City of Tacoma, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open position on Archinect Jobs for the Executive Director of The Architectural League of New York.
The role calls for an individual with a “breadth and depth of knowledge and passion for architecture and the interdisciplinary fields of the built environment” to lead the organization. Among the responsibilities for the role will be to provide “strategic clarity” for the organization’s future development, and oversee the organization’s financial and revenue growth.
Why the role interests us
The League’s search for a new Executive Director was triggered in September 2022 after Rosalie Genevro stepped down from the role after 37 years. Among the initiatives she is credited with developing are the League’s award-winning Urban Omnibus publication, the Emerging Voices and Prize for Young Architects + Designers competitions, the American Roundtable discussion series, and the recent Independent Partnership Pilot Program co-sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts.
The League’s Archinect Jobs ad for the role offers an insight into how the organization sees its future direction following Genevro’s departure. “Amid growing concerns about global climate change as well as racial and economic inequities in communities around the globe, The League has the opportunity to convene, catalyze and shape important conversations about the role architecture landscape, urban design, planning and preservation play in fostering healthier, more equitable and sustainable communities,” the advert reads.
The League’s emphasis on environmental and social issues was evident back in February when the organization honored eight individuals as part of its 2023 Emerging Voices Award, which like its 2022 Independent Project Grants, was dominated by designers concerned with social, environmental, and technological changes. Late last year, meanwhile, the League was itself the recipient of a Graham Foundation grant for its media project “Seeing the Whole: Design for Climate, Biodiversity, and Justice in a Complex and Dynamic World.”
