Following last week’s look at several open roles at Selldorf Architects, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open position on Archinect Jobs for the Dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
The new dean will be responsible for overseeing CAED’s blend of eight-degree programs across architectural engineering, architecture, city and regional planning, construction management, and landscape architecture. According to Cal Poly, the role calls for “a visionary leader with a deep and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; a solid scholarly record; and the ability to foster collaboration within the college, across the university, and beyond.”
Why the role interests us
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s search for a new dean comes after the announcement in December 2022 that the current dean Christine Theodoropoulos is to retire. Theodoropoulos was the first woman to serve as dean of the college, and after more than a decade in the position, has become the second-longest-serving dean in the college’s 75-year history.
The search for Theodoropoulos’ replacement offers an insight into how Cal Poly San Luis Obispo sees its mission evolving under new leadership. Aspiring to be “the nation’s premier comprehensive polytechnic university,” the institution will continue seeking to generate “Ready Day One graduates” through a “Learning By Doing” theory of education.
Theodoropoulos’ replacement will take up their position at a time of several notable developments and achievements in the school. Last month, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo undergraduate student Kai Benjamin Parel-Sewell was announced as one of three winners of the 2022 Robert L. Wesley Award by the SOM Foundation, while the school was also included in our list of upcoming summer architecture programs for high school students.
Last year, meanwhile, students from Cal Poly were named among the winners of the ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student Competition for 2022, while the institute unveiled a new computer program powered by artificial intelligence that can determine the damage caused to buildings by wildfires.
