Following last week’s look at an opening for a Senior Designer at Extell Development Company, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open position on Archinect Jobs for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Architectural Design at the University of Hong Kong.
The role, based out of Hong Kong, calls for applicants with postgraduate and professional degrees in architecture, with preferences given to “those holding professional qualifications and/or a Ph.D. degree in Architecture or an affiliated discipline, and to those who have experience in teaching and practicing design in a multidisciplinary context.” Responsibilities for the position will include conducting research, teaching architectural design studios, and supervising theses for postgraduate students.
Why the role interests us
The latest opening at the University of Hong Kong comes at a time when the institution is seeking to position itself as a leader in the application of technology and data in design. “Together, 5G, AI and Blockchain, will change some of the fundamentals of how markets and governments work to order society,” notes The University of Hong Kong’s architecture dean Chris Webster. “The Faculty of Architecture aims to be at the forefront of the academic research that understands these changes and predicts what they mean for society and for the built environment professions.”
The institution currently sits 14th in the latest QS global rankings of architecture schools, with the only Asian universities ranked higher being the National University of Singapore (6th), Tsinghua University (9th), and Tongji University (13th). Students and lecturers from the school have also recently found success in global architecture and design awards, including the 2021 RIBA President’s Medal and the 2021 TRANSFER Architecture Video Award.
The successful candidate would also find themselves immersed in a city whose architectural culture is often the subject of our editorial. Notable projects in Hong Kong that have recently appeared on Archinect include Snøhetta’s urban farm which is nearing completion, and the recently-opened M+ Museum by Herzog & de Meuron.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based architects to feature in our Studio Snapshot series include spatial practice, which also operates an office in Los Angeles, and Sim-Plex, whose founder Patrick Lam uses the city’s crowded landscape as inspiration for creating residential living solutions.
“We research and teach using specialist labs but we also live in a laboratory,” Webster explains. “Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, home to a population approaching 100 million, is arguably the greatest experiment in city building that human civilization has ever embarked upon. We study, research, learn and teach at its epicenter.”
