PROTOTYPING AS A KEY METHOD TO UNDERSTAND CONCRETE, ITS MORPHOLOGICAL AND STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR
The 1:50 scale prototype is the basis of this conceptual and morphological research which reinterprets in a high-rise residential building the long-span thin shell horizontal structure used by Candela on the cover of Los Manantiales restaurant (1956-1957). In the constitutive hyperboloid-paraboloid of this blanket, the two opposite control points of a plane are pulled up or down to build the geometry.
By such manipulation, the slab frees itself from its conventional flat characteristic in favor of a double-level ribbed slab. Implemented by stacking, it achieves its vertical transition without requiring other structural elements. The oblique-walled residential cells resulting from this stacking then question the ways of inhabiting the slope. The result is an alternative to Hong Kong residential monolithic tower blocks where the living cells are standardised. The Slab Tower is thus moving towards new types of vertical living that are more heterogeneous and structurally flexible.
Starting from a concept of customization, its design consists in establishing rigid rules that produce a main generic element that can be declined: the slab, with which the tower is erected. From a minimum variety of slabs, a field of maximum diversity is generated through a set of possible combinations. As a result, the effort placed on the fabrication process is reduced. The tower is therefore formed by stacking a variety of slabs. Since the stacking order can vary, a potentially individualized vertical architecture is made possible.
