Following five years of construction and planning, the LEGO Group is celebrating the official opening of the new corporate campus at its headquarters in Billund, Denmark. Designed by C.F. Møller Architects, LEGO Campus spans 54,000 square meters (581,000 square feet) and accommodates approximately 2,000 employees.
Offering a playful, inclusive, and collaborative environment, the campus was designed to reflect the company's values of “Imagination, Fun, Creativity, Caring, Learning, and Quality”. A core element of the campus concept is flexibility, which is embodied through “People House,” a concept developed in close collaboration with employees that calls for spaces that allow all employees to network and play during and after working hours.
The “People House” features facilities including a state-of-the-art fitness studio, creative workshop space, a LEGO homestay for visiting employees, a movie theater, an outside park and activity zone, a kitchen for communal cooking, and a health clinic.
“The architecture is conceived as a mini-city, composed of houses that form inner streets, squares and courtyards, where workplaces, neighborhoods and activity areas merge with the surrounding landscape of green roof surfaces, terraces, and gardens,” said C.F. Møller Architects partner Klaus Toustrup. “We look forward to seeing LEGO Campus inhabited and further developed by LEGO employees.”
In addition to creating a dynamic space for relaxation and recharging, the design team also ensured that sustainability was central to the design of LEGO Campus. The facility achieved a Gold-level LEED certification as a high-quality, low-energy office building partly powered by solar panels.
Other features include: a special gypsum fiberboard, which saved 650 tons of carbon dioxide emissions during construction and allowed 1,000 tons of construction waste to be recycled; sedum plants on roof surfaces collect rainwater, which irrigate the surrounding green spaces; ten different workplace waste sorting categories; a wealth of indigenous plants, trees, and natural environments; and outdoor furniture made from waste LEGO bricks.
“It’s a great moment to see our new Campus officially open after many years of planning and construction,” said LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen. “Many colleagues have contributed to shaping a workspace that reflects our values and instills a sense of fun not just for our employees in Billund but for all our LEGO teams across the world who regularly visit. Our mission is to inspire children so it’s important we provide a vibrant, playful workplace that enables employees to deliver inspiring experiences for kids.”
