It would be cool if they came up with a kit of parts for classicism (or any other style) that enabled you to make a bunch of different designs and ideally original ones. 9k pieces for a repetitive design like this seems to have a limited audience.
I'm almost that audience...
Lego has veered off so much since its beginnings; I Can't remember who, but a standup comedian was joking about how complicated and specific the pieces have become, and each set is custom and non interchangeable. I got my first LEGO set in 1970.
^ not entirely true. There are many custom pieces in the lesser/more affordable range of sets but they are never single-use (unless you're looking at a sail or large curved stair piece). What Lego has done over the last 18months is target the late genx and early millennials with nostalgic sets. This group has the cash and want to relive their childhood so they don't mind spending $200-$500 on a building toy. I've been collecting Lego since the late 80s and have many vintage sets. I just recently had to replace a pirate flag (1989) and just that piece alone was $30.
Don't get me wrong, I still stop at the aisle even both my kids are grown ups
