Ice believed to have fallen more than 1,400 feet from a Midtown condo crushed the roof and smashed the windshield of Deneice O’Connor’s car as she drove up Sixth Ave., the shaken motorist said Saturday. “It just crashed down on me. I immediately thought a body had fallen on my car,” O’Connor, 35, told the Daily News. — Daily News
The ice is believed to have fallen from the SHoP Architects-designed 111 W. 57th Street supertall, one of the world's thinnest skyscrapers and tallest residential buildings in the Western Hemisphere. It is a prominent fixture along “Billionaires’ Row”. Police have also reported that another person, a 17-year-old girl, was injured by falling ice originating from 40 W. 57th Street. The Friday afternoon incidents are being investigated by the city Building Department, with the inspectors issuing a violation against the owners of 111 W. 57th Street.

Falling sheets of ice from buildings is a problem that is not often discussed or a point of concern in Texas, but seems like this problem would be a common concern in areas that receive snow. When freezing temperatures combine with precipitation in Texas my entire 50' x 30' shed roof ices over and when the temperature warms, the shards of ice are gravely concerning.
^ Thanks for that insight. In all seriousness, I presumed this was a case of some billionaire tossing an extraneous ice cube over the terrace railing. Then I thought, "How could it survive frozen all the way down?"
Fortunately, a smart person intervened here.
I don't think anyone was injured, but I think something similar (snow and ice falling from tower) happened in Seattle at the end of last year. Saw a couple videos making the rounds among Seattleites on social media like this one: https://twitter.com/kromandavi...
Building in the video is the Rainier Square Tower by NBBJ. https://archinect.com/news/art...
