Cornell Tech, Cornell University’s urban campus for technology research and education, has announced the completion of the first phase of its Roosevelt Island campus development in New York City. This news comes following the recent completion and opening of the Snøhetta-designed Verizon Executive Education Center and the Graduate Roosevelt Island Hotel in 2021.
The first three buildings at Cornell Tech, which opened in September 2017 include the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Center, designed by Morphosis Architects, the TATA Innovation Center, designed by Weiss/Manfredi, and The House, designed by Handel Architects and developed by The Hudson Companies and Related Companies.
The Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Center is the campus’s first academic building offering a variety of spaces designed to support different learning modes, while incorporating advanced sustainability features and commissioned artworks.
The TATA Innovation Center hosts collaborations between cutting-edge companies from diverse industries and Cornell academic teams. The House is the tallest and largest residential Passive House high-rise in the world. It houses Cornell faculty, staff, and students.
With these new additions, the campus now hosts five buildings that are said to be among the most energy-efficient new structures.
Since opening in 2017, Cornell Tech has seen a lot of progress. It has reportedly graduated 1,200 tech alumni, launched more than 80 startups, raised nearly $1 billion in funding, reached over 5,000 New York City K-12 students and 350 teachers through computer science education, and increased the number of women pursuing computer science at CUNY through its Break Through Tech initiative. In addition, 84% more women have enrolled as CS majors, and 98% more women have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in CS, according to the institution.
“Over the past decade, we have seen how valuable space for our communities to collaborate can be, as it has spurred innovation and provided us with the opportunity to see the impact of our work in the real world,” said Greg Morrisett, Dean and Vice Provost of Cornell Tech.
The Cornell Tech Roosevelt Island campus development master plan was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with James Corner Field Operations. It is set to be fully complete in 2043 and will include two million square feet of state-of-the-art buildings, 2.5 acres of open space, and will be home to more than 2,000 graduate students and hundreds of faculty and staff.
