A homespun holiday tradition has returned to London’s Museum of Architecture for the fifth consecutive year with a tasty new selection of sweet entries from some of the industry’s biggest names.
Gingerbread, likely the low-carbon concrete of food building materials, is the focus of the museum’s annual Gingerbread City exhibition on view until the second week of January.
The exhibition is master-planned by Madeleine Kessler, the architect in charge of curating the British pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale, and is currently open to the public at the MoA’s pop-up space on Motcomb Street in Belgravia.
According to the museum: “This year's exhibition explores the theme ‘nature in the city,’ asking architects, engineers, and designers to use their design expertise (and baking genius) to create a city that explores imaginative new ways of bringing nature into our densely populated cities. Trading in their concrete, beams, and glass for dough, sweets, and icing, participants will create a mini-city masterpiece of eco-buildings and green infrastructure, and show how greener cities make them cooler, cleaner, and healthier places to be.”
The list of this year’s exhibitors offers a who’s who of both established and up-and-coming firms from the UK and abroad. Entries from Zaha Hadid Architects, Kohn Pedersen Fox, and Foster + Partners are among the many plots vying for the top spot in this year’s contest. Previous winners include top firms like Charcoalblue, NBBJ, and Emrys. A second and third place winner will be named as well.
The museum says it will use the plot fees and gate receipts to fund initiatives such as the MoA’s Grant Giving Fund, which launched in the spring of last year to “support architectural entrepreneurship and public engagement.”
Voting for the winners ends on January 9th. Information about the brief and entry requirements for this year’s contest is available on the MoA’s webpage. Additional information about visiting and group workshop sessions can be found here.
