Who doesn't love architecture models? These small-scaled versions of structures are revered treasures of the industry. While 3D modeling software and VR/AR have transformed the idea of the model, it's still safe to say the craft of model making will always play a key role in understanding structures within a space.
The skill and precision behind architecture models continue to be a beloved tool for showcasing a new project. Firms like MAD Architects, for example, continue to stun design professionals and architecture enthusiasts with their mesmerizing models. To learn more about the art of architecture models, we focus on San Francisco-based model-making practice Gemmiti Model Art. Their work and passion for model-making have positioned them as one of the top model-making practices for over 30 years.
Founded by Lisa Gemmiti in 1999, Gemmiti Model Art has worked with Apple, NASA, Adobe, and renowned architecture firms like Renzo Piano. Gemmiti explains her love for "the technical and artistic challenges presented to us. I am fortunate to work with a group of skilled model artists who share my passion for model making."
While the art of model-making has evolved thanks to laser cutting, CNC machining, and 3D printing, she adds, "We are sensitive to the fact that models are labor-intensive, so we want to help our clients maximize every hour we spend on their project. It is very gratifying to see our models put to use and watch the power of communication that physical models have when presented to a group or are simply left in a room for people to discover and explore on their own."
Currently, the practice is seeking a Senior Architectural Model Maker to join their team. In their listing, they explain their ideal candidate is someone who can "design and oversee their design, and also who has the hands-on model-making experience to work with us full time. We are also open to specialists who work as independent contractors."
Skills required for model-making don't just include a steady hand. The candidate must also be well-versed in AutoCAD or Rhino beyond the professional experience of assembling professional scale models and using fabrication machinery like laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC machines, and metal etching. Other skills needed for this position include "plastics fabrication, woodworking, Rhinocam, spray painting (HVLP), furniture making, LED lighting design and installation, and model landscaping."
While the pandemic has impacted many architecture offices and design firms, Gemmiti shares that important warehouse updates have been made to ensure health and safety measures are met. "We work in a beautiful warehouse in the Mission District in an 8,600 square foot facility. Our model shop is highly organized and fully equipped with laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC machines, a paint room, a massive dust collector, and everything needed for the construction of models and furniture to display models. We spent much of the Covid shutdown upgrading our facility in preparation for the influx of work, which is here now."
Many of their projects have been featured in the U.S and Internationally. With a clientele consisting of leading architects, developers, engineers, and many others, their passion and commitment to model building position them as leaders in the field. People have been making beautiful and effective architectural models long before AutoCAD, Rhino, laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC machines, and Rhinocam.
