Juan Ramon Cantu draws on a number of emerging practices, competitions, and academics to argue an evolution is underway for Post-Digital Drawing / Post-Digital Rendering. He notes "Ironically, this evolution of the Post-Digital aesthetic seems to be going in the opposite direction to its original trajectory, embracing the digital render."
Although many ‘Nectors weren’t fans of the aesthetics/phase/phrase, b3tadine[sutures] was "I'm in love. I've hated rendering techniques - representative realism - forever. These images are provocative, sexy, and don't pander to client...The author is on point. I've been waiting for these." At the same time sameolddoctor didn’t see what all the fuss was about, "Been advocating this for years, but seems like the super shiny chinese renders are what clients want, especially the low grade clients with a shit ton of money".
Plus, Karim Abdel-Wadood took a stab at answering the question What Is the Real Threat of Artificial Intelligence to the Architecture Profession?
midlander wasn’t too worried "Something like that room-layout generator is neat - but honestly I can't see a situation where I'd everuse it. Very basic situations like applying mimimum compliant bathroom layouts to designated spaces in a shopping center for example - that would be helpful. But it's like 0.1% of the labor on a large project. It would save 3 days of work for some poor intern somewhere."
Frank Gehry chatted with NYT culture reporter Robin Pogrebin about being too busy, more and more with giving back, to retire. As he put it "I’m just free...now that I don’t have to worry about fees". rcz1001 admitted "I have criticized him in the past but as long as he's able to practice architecture, so be it. What else would he do other than being a visiting critic or fishing or golfing?"
Josh Niland plugged the launch of the "Architecture is Free Foundation". Then Daniel Horowitz, AIF Founder jumped into the comments to clarify their goals, "We simply see an opportunity to reach and include more students in architectural education made possible by new digital technologies. We would like to see hybrid paths to licensure as well that make success possible for a wider swath of people. We see the necessity and place for all kinds of schools and welcome the diversity."
Modern furniture design giant Herman Miller, Inc. announced a $1.8 billion acquisition plans of rival Knoll Inc. Gregory Walker offered up a considered take
"mixed feelings - waiting to talk to people in both companies before forming any solid opinions...what doesn't seem to make as much sense is that both already had strong office and home identities...the winners on the design side are going to be the euro/asian superstars who already have been working with both...i don't know who gets squeezed yet, in terms of layoffs. probably middle management types first - the sales teams, so long as there's still 2 brands, will probably stay as is."
Most ‘Nectors agreed that the updated designs for a Thom Mayne | Kane Architecture and Urban Design | LPC restoration, with new carriage house, in historic Fort Green Brooklyn, was improved from the original. As thisisnotmyname commented "The changes look good. A rare instance of the deBlasio-era LPC doing something useful and beneficial."
On Earth Day, new Contributing Writer, Niall Patrick Walsh brought us Chicago’s first certified single-family Passive House. Not only that, architects HPZS did it with a transformed 1890s home. Responding to some lazy criticism, Everyday Architect chided
"The lack of knowledge shown in these comments about Passive House is amazing ...and I'm not even a convert. I've just educated myself in order to better serve our clients who might be interested in it...There are definitely meaningful critiques for Passive House and this project in particular. But these tired ones are not it."

Continuum was curious about potential ethical/legal implications "the salary in this industry is disappointing. I need to make my ends meet and would like to work part time for another architecture studio - much smaller and mostly focused on visualization... When do you think this becomes conflict of interest?" Both atelier nobody and bowling_ball had considered/explored the possibilities of taking on side work but found it to be "more work than it was worth" and not very "high-grossing". Abie suggested checking out freelance/gig-economy platforms like fivver, "A lot of people are doing it nowadays".
Wood Guy is kicking himself "repeatedly for not switching to a BIM platform long ago. I have researched the options ad infinitum but have not been able to commit to a new program." Yet is now leaning towards Vectorworks?
tduds starts off by noting that Archicad "+ Vectorworks seem to be more popular with people who work on smaller scale design." whistler’s firm has been using 'MiniCAD-Vectorworks for close to 30 years...It's been a super stable program for us and only very rarely have we felt we needed something that has a bit more horsepower, but if we do it's likely a project we aren't suited for." Jaetten personally finds Vectorworks "a bit clunky and drafting 2D is not as fast as AutoCAD (no command line" but on the plus side "You get a lot more value with Vectorworks, and it's 3D modelling is much more intuitive than Revit." Later randomised shared a fun fact "Studio Daniel Libeskind uses VW too!"
Finally, fobmasta’s boss "wants to incorporate her business and take me on as a partner."
After the OP clarified a few points, midlander comments "i think you need to have a much bigger discussion with her - probably a few meetings over the next month - to discuss what your role would be and what she expects from you as partner. be clear in stating the direction you'd like to take the work, and see how open she is to letting you operate with autonomy on your projects. it's possible she'll rescind the offer after an open discussion, but that's fine - much better than getting into an unsatisfactory partnership." Basically the deal sounds like a classic "non-equity partnership" and a number of folks cautioned against the liability or questioned the owners motives.
However, mightyaa had a different take.
"Let me see if I'm getting this right. You want to eventually start your own firm. You have been presented with an opportunity to become a partner in a established firm with a established client base. Additionally, the level of commitment includes renaming the firm to include you specifically which is not something you do lightly because its sort of permanent and legal thing..I don't see a huge downside unless the firm is bleeding and just needs your money to pay off debts. Even then, might not be a bad deal."
Over at Strelka Mag, Ryan Madson worked through the lessons of Stalker and how "Prompted by Tarkovsky’s humanist themes and our entanglements with the post-industrial world, we might go even further to locate a new kind of post-Stalker humanism or metaphysics in the regenerative landscapes of urban and industrial ruin."
