The GSD kicked off September with lectures from Linda Shi, Emmanuel Pratt, Metahaven, and Charles Davis. Specialty lectures included discussions led by Rafael Moneo with Sarah Whiting (John Hejduk Soundings Lecture), Seth Denizen (Kiley Fellow Lecture), Alex Krieger (50th Anniversary of Urban Design Lecture), Edgar Pieterse (Loeb Lecture), and Michael Maltzan, Mike Alvidrez, and Helen Leung (John T. Dunlop Lecture). Also, during the month of September the GSD held their "In Pursuit of Equitable Development: Lessons from Washington, Detroit, and Boston" Symposium.
Continuing from their September lectures, the GSD welcomes a strong guest speaker line-up for October and November. On October 15th the school welcomes celebrated chef Marcus Samuelsson as he lectures on "race, class, place, and equity in the American food landscape" for the Rouse Visiting Artist Lecture. Joining him are Thelma Golden, Toni L. Griffin, and Mark Raymond. Nasser Rabbat will conduct the Aga Khan Program Lecture on October 22nd, and Everett L. Fly will present during the Fredrick Law Olmsted Lecture on October 27th. For those interested in architecture and its role within a democracy, Mark Lee and Nicholas de Monchaux will come together for the GSD's "The Architecture of Democracy" panel discussion on October 28th. Nikil Saval will discuss "A Rage in Harlem" for the school's Open House Lecture.
The 2020 Practice Plenary: Crisis & Equity Symposium will take place on October 31st as a way for the school to reflect, respond, and unfold the relationship between crisis and inequity. The GSD shares, "this year's Practice Plenary explores how crises unveil issues of inequity in the built environment, challenge the ethical role of the architect, and question new modes of disciplinary engagement."
Public lectures continue through November as the school hosts discussions with Sierra Bainbridge and Lisa Tziona Switkin, Aimi Hamraie, and Kathryn Yusoff. Closing out the Fall lecture series will be a lecture on "Black Reconstruction" led by the Black Reconstruction Collective and a presentation by Sheila Foster discussing "Co-Cities: Reimagining the City as a Commons."
