Ryan Scavnicky, who you may recognize from his meme-laden Instagram, or from his Extra Extra feature series here on Archinect, has launched his YouTube channel featuring reviews on the architecture of video games.
This review of Super Mario Bros. seriously brings back some memories of my childhood. He's also reviewed Doom, so check that out too.

thought it was a glitch!
SMB 2 was the most architecturally compelling.
commenting down below on Archinect, what next game to review? as Paul notes, might be Doom.
So with regard to architectural representation -
1) section (Mario and many games of that era)
2) perspective (Doom (Wolfenstein))
3) Marble Madness (why it sucked to play - ISO? (don't waste your time on that one)
Suggestions:
4) Minecraft or Roblox
5) Scorched Earth
6) QBasic Nibbles (kid in my high school made this into the Tron motorcycle race - 4 guys sitting at one keyboard, occasionally a girl) a Plan orientate game like SimCity? Civilization, Warcraft, etc...
7) Lode Runner (version where you could make your own worls)
8) Drug Wars, TI-86 style (kidding)
9) Unreal (gaming engine for architecture renderings) whatever happened to this?
[obviously haven't played much since the 90's]
Whoa, haven't thought about Scorched Earth in 25 years. That or Lemmings or Populus - i.e. games where you manipulate the ground as part of the primary game mechanic - could be good.
Lemmings...do remember that one....well ground as a mechanic in general with values placed on the areas (pixels), grid plane - whatever, very basic Cellular Automata stuff. Conway's Game of Life is before my time, much later in philosophy and math discovered it.
on Doom - so WADs wasn't covered, which I guess would be a more annoying loser thing (starting to sound like those losers on youtube my kids watch all the time). Anyway, the kids would calls this "hacking" or a "hack" these days (its not hacking really, you didn't break through anything, just modify logics by others to somewhat fit your goals (because you're not smart enough to make your own...))...
but back then you would take other people's WADs, switch out shit and make basic levels...recommend a little research into the making of the WAD, the "3D" perspective "engine" of 2D renderings. It's somewhat the equivalent of what's called "Baking" in some rendering softwares (when you have low computing requiring somewhat real effects, you render the light on surfaces first, unwrap, and then apply the result just as a texture map - did a NJ light rail station this way for an artist, like 15+ years ago, the one with dinosaurs and space)...
anyway, you could add that to the end diagram as an background, formula, Ryan's diagrams have math behind them that works in a machine....anyway WAD file of a FLW https://www.wad-archive.com/wad/Shiprock house
I'd add on Legend of Zelda and Dragon Warrior as very early plan-based navigation with idealized architectural designs for cities and landscapes.
Duck Hunt! (haha)
COMMODORE64!
Was an amazing computer for 64k of Ram and 16 graphics...which reminds me Skate or Die or Duel Test Drive (another perspective to discuss)....wait wait (also was a great Amiga game) - Leisure Suit Larry in 16 colors (kids of funny).
add one more thing, the Monday Night Football game had speech...the Sound for programming was usually Wave so what the Tron kid explained to me, like analogue records, that's how they made sound in very basic system like C64 (at the time PC's were like shit calculators compared to a C64 gaming wise)....you record it to data for playback, not actually program it...Goldwave (free) converts sound to TXT file (you could transfer to CVS etc...) basically sound is Y-intensity and X time, that's it....ok back to work.
sorry sorry - you "code" now, not "program", and "hacking" isn't really "hacking", you kids are cute - Ryan's theme in super mario.
Duke Nukem 3D, not only the best FPS ever but I remember it had 3rd person viewing possibilities or even from fixed positions, and did I mention it included even the program to make your own levels! "Levels Jerry, levels!"
Or simply analyse the failed city planning of American cities through Grand Theft Auto or something.
You kids spend far too much time infected with tech-toy...video game viruses. The Boomer businessmen made a fortune$ selling you X-Box, PlayStation gadgetry to neglect the REAL for their IDEAL $$$$. It's the same 'con-job' in the White House, et. al. You got SCAMED kiddies! Further and further away you go into your isolationist, pleasure tripping - bubble while your environment dies it's not so slow death. Investigate just how Silicone Valley went from science based to consumer based, exploded in size and had to form Menlo Park where San Francisco became and urban Park-for-the-Rich. What the hell have they been teaching in architecture curriculums...oh yeah...How and which button to push !
TAXI !
fortune$ SCAMED pleasure tripping - bubble it's not so slow death. San Francisco became and urban Park-for-the-Rich. curriculums.
And you graduated with a degree in what, typing?
the virus didn't kill your boomer ass, damn...the conspiracy must be true...did you know $$$ is a drug?
I actually recently spent an evening playing original DOOM via a web-hosted emulator... It was fun and brought back so many muscle memories!
Of course... we weren't typists as we used pencil to paper. Virus, kill
your Boomer ass... I do enjoy your discourse something which
was nonexistent when 'Hal' made his studio presence...shhhhhh
Microsoft/Intel/CADD boy might get disturbed cartooning. You kids need a sense
of humor as you give me a laugh every time I see you in your daffy ball caps & 'skin illustrations'...and I'll bet you NEVER played baseball,
yes?
Start stringing those disjointed thoughts into sentences, please.
you wrote CADD! your boomer ass is old. Just following your discourse. Had a 0.500 batting average in little leagues, went to to 0.200 in high school. Played 3rd base, but baseball is not a real sport anyway. NFL is the only league that matters.
Evidently baseball was just too much for you to figure. Y'all quibble over
anachronisms and typos only to make 'sound-bite', out of context...
twitter-like reply's like your president. Better to study Russian, and
or, Chinese languages to communicate with your future masters!
Now, put that in your comic book, super-Hero minds and go watch a 'Hollywood' movie. Put down your sideways - base ball caps and wear
a football helmet [sideways] and look through the ear-hole...you may need a hard hat the way this country's headed!
I gotta GO !
Did you know there are more English speakers in China than there are in the USA?
Speaking of percentiles...did you know that while playing video games for weeks on end sort of like a marathon and not changing your clothes, hence, not washing your socks [2 socks, one on each foot] AND forgetting, being all torqued-up in gaming
I just wanted to point out I'm still better than you...I mean actually if you followed your train of thought, which Rickie missed, you note we're falling further and further into a bubble environment and then you jump to somehow having to learn Chinese and Russian to serve the master, but you are clearly missing history here - or commons sense - for us to live in the Matrix, or little bubbles controlled by computers you have to remember they all pretty much think like Englishmen. Alan Turing - English. George Boole - English. Steve Jobs - English Speaking. Billl Gates - English Speaking, etc...Point is the game and the logic that everyone is attempting to learn is indeed English....The last great empire remains the master and by the way, the rich are pushing this pandemic to the extreme to put a little hurt on those so called future masters...but again, you're a simple boomer who actually thinks Trumps Tweets matter.
dude you are completely clueless...but thank you for the thumbs down, that's like a thumbs-up for me. The old fart responded with his actual account and I laughed a bit at their portfolio. Maybe he should of spent more time learning the future master?
Life cannot be explained to you.
Ricky that's your girlfriend, don't confuse me with your girlfriend.
Rick you ever heard of Google? Don't you think if I didn't know what that was I would google it? Now I don't think you're smart enough to go back to total nerdom as an "actor" and respond the way you did, I think at best, to give you some credit, you're maybe Autistic (or man with other priorities as I call it, not really a condition, unless you're a woman and you're narrow minded assessment of reality and not understanding anti-social behaviro decide to categorize everything - sounds racist, haha)....You understand I made a joke and insulted you at the same time right?
so you're a retard.
.....
toodles.
Who said I was trolling? That's kind of just an opinion right? Subjective perspective on comments received. If we were in a bar in real life I might just say the same things and I might just think you indeed are dumb, not as an insult, but as a fact (which is a fact). Again, you're not the brightest outside of internet existence, perhaps you're the bot?
another suggestion - one I never understood really as a kid
