Please join us for a panel discussion on the role of student publications in architecture school.
What is the role of student-led publications?
In an era when digital rules, what’s the value of continuing the tradition of print?
How do student-led publications function, from concept, to editorial-production, to distribution?
We hope to answer these questions, and more, with a panel of representatives from UCLA, SCI-Arc, USC, and Cal Poly Metro...
UCLA: Rayne Laborde & David Vasquez (POOL)
SCI-Arc: Marcelyn Gow (Offramp); Richard Mapes, Corie Yaguchi, Irvin Shaifa (Underscore)
USC: Alvin Huang (Supertall)
Cal Poly L.A. Metro Program: Stephen Phillips (L.A. [TEN])
The panel will be moderated by Archinect’s Paul Petrunia and will take place at the A+D Museum on Saturday, October 19th, at 5pm. The event is part of Archinect’s event programming during The Los Angeles Schools exhibition, running at the A+D until November 24th.

If these are student-led publications, why aren't there any students on the panel?
This says a lot about architecture and its perpetual discomfort with actually letting young people lead in our educational and professional communities.
Jackie, the panel consists of 8 individuals that work on these publications; 5 are students and 3 are educators
If the students are the leaders, they should be named. There's no excuse not to.
They are all named
Some of these names were added following my initial comment.
Jackie, the only thing that has changed is 3 people have been added to the panel - 2 additional students from SCI-Arc, and Stephen Phillips, the director of Cal Poly Metro's program. Prior to this, all individuals were listed by name, with 3 students and 2 faculty originally, and 5 students and 3 faculty now, with the 3 new additions. We can assure you that your claim that there aren't any students on the panel has never been correct. There has always been a panel consisting of more students than faculty.
To be clear the "SuperTall" publication for USC is from 2-years ago representing an independent studio supported by the last dean....not a present representation of the student body as a whole.
USC as of this moment has NO student-led student publication. The only representation of work is "Index"; the current publication that is solely run by administrators with no input by the students.
"Index" is usually given out to prospective / incoming students after they apply. This means that there is no marketing for the student body to the public, in terms of events held, newsletters, or any other form of promotion within the school.
Due to the fact that there are no students involved in the making of these publications, the quality is recognizably lower than other schools that offer such an option. This begs the question as to why students are not given a chance to have a voice as editors of their work at USC and why the publication does not have a bigger outreach to the public.
you bring up many good points. We do plan on addressing this issue on the panel. We hope Alvin, who will be representing USC, will have some insight into why the school does not engage their student body more with student publications.
