In anticipation of the launch party of the Archinect Outpost, our new retail initiative in Downtown LA’s Arts District, we present part 1 of the curated collection of small-run, independently published architecture periodicals we will have on display:
ART PAPERS provides an accessible forum for examining, discussing, and documenting the full spectrum of contemporary art and culture, as well as the ways they affect and reflect our lives. They engage online, in print, and through public programming.
Beautifully Banal is a celebration of the beauty that can be found in the ordinary by mixing whimsy and everyday life. It is an exploration of traditional architecture drawing types combined with comic book storytelling, resulting in graphic novel under the guise of architectural discourse.
CLOG is an international publication that critically explores one topic at a time from as many perspectives as possible. While online press, blogs, tweets, social media, and other digital forums have drastically increased the speed at which information is distributed, debated, and consumed today, CLOG slows things down. Each issue explores a single subject of unique relevance, from multiple viewpoints and through a variety of means.
Concrete Maps are designed and edited by Blue Crow Media, with the goal of creating thoughtfully designed and carefully curated city maps that encourage exploration not often encouraged by more traditional city guides. The New York Times describes the maps as "part design manifesto, part urban architecture guide.” Archinect Outpost will be carrying Brutalist Boston Map, Brutalist London Map, Brutalist Paris Map, Brutalist Sydney Map, Brutalist Washington Map, Concrete Chicago Map, Concrete New York Map, Concrete Tokyo Map, and Concrete Toronto Map.
Ed is Archinect’s very own initiative to curate thoughts on specific architecture-related themes relevant to the time of publication. It is a hybrid publication, co-existing with the interactive, community-based platform that Archinect nurtures at a different scale than the internet naturally facilitates.
Flat Out is an independent print magazine that enacts multiple genres of architectural criticism. In each issue, readers will find a series of columns authored by a rotating cast of undercover writers and designers. Character portraits by a different artist are commissioned for every issue.
Fresh Meat is an independent journal published by students of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with support of UIC faculty and staff. Founded in 2008, FM publishes content that both reflects and challenges UIC’s pedagogical agenda and is a response to the American architectural discipline.
Harvard Design Magazine probes beyond the established design disciplines to enrich and diversify current discourse. Scholarly, poetic, and visually lush, each issue triggers new interpretations of design’s defining role in today’s culture. Distinguished and unexpected voices from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning meet those from the realms of art, science, literature, and beyond.
Archinect Outpost will be located at 900 E 4th St, right next to the A+D Museum, in the heart of Downtown LA's Arts District. If you haven't yet, RSVP here to reserve your spot!
Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 of the publishers represented at Archinect Outpost.
