With the restaurant's completion in March 2019, Europe's first underwater restaurant was a highly anticipated project from none other than Norway's Snøhetta. After Archinect's coverage of the restaurant opening, we take a peek inside this one of a kind gastronomical experience. Now three months after its initial public opening, photographers Inger Marie Grini and Ivar Kvaal take us on a visual tour of Under.
It is quite easy to assume that upon entering the restaurant, feelings of claustrophobia may arise. However, thanks to the talents of Snøhetta's design team and design collaborators, the space is anything but confining. From the custom-made textile paneling by Kvadrat, which mimic the underwater colors of coral and sea life, to the custom made tables and seating by Hamran, every inch of the restaurant is meticulously crafted to the underwater experience. Down to the custom ceramics, which were designed specifically for the restaurant thanks to Ment, Odd Standard, and Trond Skog.
The interior color details throughout the restaurant transition as visitors walk further into the space. From the dark greens and blues to the corals and rose-colored hues, the restaurant does not feel as if you are 20,000 leagues under the sea. Instead, the atmosphere exudes a relaxing and colorful experience. In a recent article by Danish lifestyle and interiors magazine Bo Bedre, Snøhetta's senior interior architect, Heidi Pettersvold Nygaard, shares the team's design goals. "We have been very conscious of the rawness and brutality that exudes from the landscape, the weather, and the concrete structure. At the same time, we have striven to work with a sense of texture, lighting, and acoustics that should assure a cozy and warm atmosphere."
