The link between property and transport has been perhaps the most durable in human history.
Since the ancients, few things have delivered higher land values with more certainty than advances in transport, from roads to canals, railways to highways. [...]
But now, the dawn of the driverless car—promising a utopia of stress-free commutes, urban playgrounds and the end of parking hassles—threatens to complicate the calculus for anyone buying property.

Bloomberg Technology explains how the real estate industry is already preparing for all that sweet, sweet valuable space to open up for development once the widespread arrival of driverless vehicles makes parked cars — and the blocked square footage they occupy — a thing of the past.

even if there are no drivers and no gas (our future robotic chauffeurs run on batteries, I assume) there will still be an economic incentive to minimize travel distance - both in consumable elements of a vehicle, and time in it. I'm not saying it's nothing... but location is still very much important. Agree that lots of land will become available too!
Couldn't agree more archanonymous. We've been moving away from spending an inordinate amount of time in a metal pod rather than walking outdoors. Where they will have an impact ( I think) is as a revamped trolley type system but more diverse and infinitely less expensive.
"a utopia of stress-free commutes"
Hahahahahahaha
Im always surprised how non-chalantly the term "utopia" is thrown around

I mostly foresee more traffic jams. There will be a huge increase in traffic movements when empty driverless vehicles are going around town to pick up their rides, just around the time you would want to be picked up again from work...we don't just need electrical cars or driverless cars, we need a totally different mobility system all together. Traffic jams of driverless electric cars are still traffic jams.
