Archtober is back for another year! The New York City-wide festival has 31 days of exhibitions, lectures, conferences, films, tours, and other public activities that celebrate the significance of architecture and design in everyday life.
Archinect and Bustler are happy to be media sponsors for the sixth year in a row. From Archtober's lengthy calendar of events, we picked some highlights for Week 2, October 9-16:
Confluence: Industrial Waterfronts and Freshkills Park Boat Tour | October 9
The AIANY & Freshkills Park planners host the only public water tour into the Freshkills waterway. Officially closed in 2001, Freshkills Park is the largest landfill-to-park transformation project in the world and when complete will be one of the largest parks in NYC.
Spaces for Art: Annabelle Selldorf and Cathleen McGuigan in Dialogue | October 11
Pratt Institute's School of Continuing and Professional Studies will present a conversation between Architectural Record Editor-in-Chief Cathleen McGuigan and Annabelle Selldorf. McGuigan will interview Selldorf about her career and the ups and downs of designing spaces for viewing art.
Is Design Political? | October 12
Taking place at the Goethe Institut, Friedrich von Borries — architect and professor of Design Theory at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg — will talk about his concept of design as an emancipatory praxis that intervenes in the world in order to change and improve it. von Borries will be in conversation with Juliet Kinchin, Curator at the MoMA Department of Architecture and Design.
Film: Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future | October 12
Catch an evening screening of the documentary “Eero Saarinen: The Architect who saw the Future” at the Scandinavia House. After the film, Director Peter Rosen and film subject Eric Saarinen will be present for a Q&A.
Architecture, Art & Politics at the UN | October 13
The United Nations Capital Master Plan (UNCMP), substantially completed over a year ago, has been the subject of very little public discussion. This talk will present the issues, rationales, and methods that led to the final results.
Demystifying Energy Modeling: Workshop #1 | October 14
This workshop teaches the benefits of using modeling analysis to optimize sustainable design performance, meet a project's sustainability goals, and how models can help practitioners win contracts.
Steinway Piano Factory Tour | October 15
For you musical folks, take a factory tour of one of the world's most famous piano makers, Steinway & Sons, who has called Queens home for decades. Their place in local history is worth finding out about.
Open House New York | October 15-16
Spend the whole weekend visiting — or revisiting! — NYC's most significant buildings, from the historic to the contemporary. More than 250 sites across all five boroughs will be open to the public, along with tours, talks, and more.
