A spec office is not how a superstar usually makes a debut. [...]
Ingels hasn't reinvented the form with 1200 Intrepid, but he does manage to inject it with an impressive level of pizzazz, imagination, and even refinement. [...]
The optical effects are mesmerizing. If you stand at the corner and look across the breadth of the facade, the front wall appears to be tumbling to the ground like a collapsing row of dominos. The curves are reminiscent of a Richard Serra sculpture.

I could be wrong but, I don't see anything in the inherent geometry of that rectilinear volume that could be logically extrapolated into a warped façade.
Donna Sink "The BIG project is incredibly stripped down, which I love."
I doubt that it could be viewed that way. There wasn't anything added for it to be stripped away.
As for the 3XN building, I find it more inengaging but the warped part of the façade has a different function from that of BIG's Navy Yard building. Merging façade and roof in one.
But I also see why there would be a bit much happening.
However, I think there are many refined détails and I really like the way the building meets the ground whereas with the BIG project, it is dishearteningly nonchalant
z1111, which building are you referring to?
chatter, I'll agree that "stripped down" isn't the correct term, if you're saying that term implies active removal.
The BIG building is minimalist. Example: the expansion joints are concurrent with the concrete panels. In the 3XN building, the expansion joints interrupt the flow of the brick. That's the kind of detail that is very, very difficult to cover up, which is why "less is more work".
Donna, I don't view it as being stripped down in the sense that I do not see it as a view of minimalist reserve. You make an interesting point about the expansion joint being integrated within the ratioale ofthe modular panel assembly. However, this is commonly undertaken in more mundane panel cladded buildings that one couldn't possibly call minimalist.
Donna, the BIG building. I haven't really looked at the one by 3xn.
Neat! It looks like the building's collapsing.
Thayer-D, If it actually looked like the building was collapsing, people would be too afraid to lease space in it.
