The Boston Architectural College’s School of Interior Architecture offers professionally accredited Bachelor of Interior Architecture and Master of Interior Architecture degree programs. Both degrees help students prepare to become NCIDQ-certified interior designers within a framework of mentored work in the field. Evening class scheduling after the first year allows students to gain real-world practical knowledge and build their network, while exploring creative scholarship in their academic work.
“Interior Architecture is the design of human experience,” said Crandon Gustafson, Dean of the School of Interior Architecture. “Good design makes health and well-being a priority, and achieves its aims sustainably in balance with nature. We ask our students to base their decisions on a proven body of knowledge, and to draw and apply ideas taken from their own practical experience.”
Both the Bachelor and Master of Interior Architecture programs are professionally accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). The undergraduate program focuses on the character and use of spaces rather than on solely aesthetic or structural approaches. The combination of academic courses and professional practice prepares students to enter the market as full members of the design team.
The Master of Interior Architecture degree, ranked #8 in the country by DesignIntelligence, is a first-professional program for holders of non-design undergraduate degrees. Students begin by acquiring basic design and drawing skills, and continue to create design solutions of increasing complexity, as they add technical and theoretical understanding to their studio work. The program culminates in a guided, independent thesis project.
The School also just launched a Master of Science in Interior Architecture degree program, a 30-credit post-professional online master’s degree. The four-semester program includes courses in theory, method, and application. The new degree is intended for someone who has a bachelor's degree in interior design or interior architecture and wishes to pursue further studies in design strategies and the application of design research, or to develop a specialized area of knowledge through mentored, self-directed study.
The new program’s low-residency model allows students to work full-time while earning their degree. The online classroom has the same rigor as the College's traditional classrooms, and students enrich their online courses with two 3-day residencies in Boston that bring their courses to life and build connections between classmates and instructors.
In all three programs, students draw upon their academic studies and their daily workplace or community project learning as they develop their understandings and abilities in the field of Interior Architecture. Students think critically about sustainable design, social and cultural contexts, and their own developing identity as interior architects.
