“Unpacking the Cube” portrays the conceptual roots of Steven Holl, Leong Leong, and Levenbetts
CHAMBER gallery in New York asked Steven Holl Architects, Leong Leong, and Levenbetts — who are each at different points in their professional careers — to dig deep into the conceptual roots of their practices and manifest those concepts into physical objects, which are currently on exhibition.
25-year-old architect and veteran sculptor win WWI Memorial competition in D.C.
The WWICC launched a two-stage design competition to search for the most suitable design for the memorial, which would commemorate the more than 116,000 American men and women who died during the Great War. 25-year-old architect Joseph Weishaar in collaboration with veteran sculptor Sabin Howard won with their design "The Weight of Sacrifice".
Six public interest design winners announced for 2016 SEED Awards
The SEED Awards recognizes top-notch public interest design projects that address some of today's critical social, economic, and environmental issues. Winning teams will publicly present their projects at the 2016 Structures for Inclusion conference in March.
Baltic Way Memorial winners contemplate the power of peaceful protest
Designers worldwide sent their ideas for a Baltic Way Memorial, which would commemorate the non-violent protest of 2 million demonstrators who joined hands on August 23, 1989 across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as a fight for freedom from the Soviet Union's 50-year regime.
Shortlisted concepts for Redefining St. Hilda’s revealed, will be exhibited Feb. 1
In celebration of their 125th anniversary, St. Hilda's College in Oxford is planning for an upgrade. This past fall, the College selected five shortlisted concepts out of 19 invited architecture firms, but the designs weren't revealed until last week.
“Architecture of Independence: African Modernism” opens at the Graham Foundation
First exhibited at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein last year, "Architecture of Independence: African Modernism" is now at the Graham Foundation in Chicago. The exhibition focuses on the complex process of nation building in five African countries who fought for independence from their colonizers during the 1960s and '70s.
“Creation from Catastrophe” at RIBA explores the possibilities of post-disaster design
As difficult as the aftermath may be, disasters become an opportunity for architects and communities to figure out new ways to design and build. The exhibition questions our relationship with the natural environment and the fleeting nature of architecture, but it also highlights the capability architects possess to instigate change.
