He’s Mr. Lifestyle of the rich and famous, do you want a piece of him? No not Britney Spears, but rather world-renowned architect Renzo Piano. Visitors to the recent Piece by Piece: Renzo Piano Building Workshop at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai were engaged in the evolution of the famous architect’s key works through multi-media presentations. Various study models made of wood, foam, morphed plastic, and even pantyhose provided insight into the limitless and unpredictable avenues of the architectural creative process. Suspended models of various scale and detail hovered above viewers as informative construction process documentaries played on the wall.
The entire the exhibition space pulsed with creativity. It was as though visitors were inside Piano’s brain. The display workshop tables the neurons. Visitors the receptors. The exploratory exhibit is now closed, but like a catchy American pop-song, piece by piece Renzo Piano’s ingenious design ingenuity has already trickled out the museum doors and into Shanghai’s creative cognition.

? indeed
Actually, I was just completing the headline. I like the idea of opening up a window for the public into the process and products of architectural design. But this piece is too fawning.
I saw a similar exhibition (much smaller) at LACMA, before or during they started construction on their latest addition. Going into the exhibition, I thought it was a PR driver didn't expect much. Boy was I wrong.. Renzo is the man, so many awesome models, maquettes, drawings, all super finely crafted, shit blew me away....You wanna talk about invention and attention to detail, clean modernism. The dude has an awesome practice and has surrounded himself with some really talented and dedicated people to achieve that level of output. If you have the opportunity to see this exhibition or something similar...don't miss it.
I saw that same exhibit. Of course there's ego involved, but overall it was a really good presentation on several levels (the site/project; the process; and the products we make).
