The book presents 53 drawings that Siza created over a period of 60 years, beginning in Porto to the end of the 1950s when he made his way into the architecture world. In an interview, Siza talks about his most significant encounters with colleagues and friends, and the lasting relationships that were established.
Authors Raul Betti and Greta Ruffino worked with Siza himself in selecting which drawings to publish from his numerous sketchbooks and diaries. Digitally reproducing the drawings involved an in-depth study on materials and a digital image restoration process to enhance every detail.
The book includes portraits of Siza's family members, drawings of his travels throughout the world, and even memorable recollections of the experiences that he shared in the company of his close friends like Eduardo Souto de Moura, Fernando Tavora, Alcino Soutinho, Vittorio Gregotti, Gabriele Basilico, and more.
“I like to draw.. It helps me to relax and to shake off the stress and the concentration on work, especially during those periods with endless deadlines to meet. Drawing frees you. The advantage of drawing is that it lets you be analytical and, at the same time, feel the environment”. — Álvaro Siza
