Architect's Retreat

This project derived from a case study of Alvar Aalto's Villa Mairea.  The modules in an aggregation study model- inspired by the bamboo stairs- were manipulated until they enclosed space.  The vertical nature of bamboo is challenged and the result is an organic form.  The bamboo is exploited in order to create an unconventional form.

The bamboo forms a frame that both supports and cradles the glass panels.  There are two spaces: one for rest and one for work.  The ground floor houses the washroom, storage, and elevated bed.  The first floor is the studio office space.  The structure is a glass nest that reveals views to the outdoors, allowing repose and connection with nature.  The retreat is parasitic: it has the same goals as the Villa, and it mimics the materials of the Villa, but is uses these goals and materials in its own way.
