The architectural design for the new Tianjin Cultural Center seeks to create a landmark in the new city development. The conceptual design is based on a singular vanguardist shape, with a conceptual language that relates to this sort of facility, with the intention of creating a variety of environments that enriches the cultural experience. From the formal language outstands the unusual angles that shape the building, contradicting the “normality” of the surroundings buildings- an integration by contrast. The building consists on a raised L volume with a central void, combined with a second story with a rectangular shaped block. The functional organizations is divided into two floors. The first floor contains two exhibition spaces and a commercial space, and the second floor is constituted by the administration offices, a library, a mediatheque, an auditorium and two workshops. The proposed architectural expression is essentially the result of the following strategies:
Create a landmark building with a singular shape:
Visibility over the surrounding, to see and to bee seen:
Predominance of long horizontal openings:
Sunshading and appropriate orientation for improving natural lighting conditions:
Volumetric definition based on the dialogue between the public garden and the interior spaces.
