controlling scale in google maps/earth

anyone have any idea on how to control the scale of a view in google earth or maps precisely?

i'm trying to make up some 1:1 comparisons between various cities, and it'd be nice to be able to capture aerial views of different places at the same scale factor.... yet google maps seems to be a little "off"

any ideas?

has anybody seen the windows live alternative to GE?
...it's got also 3D pictures which you can rotate by clicking the north axes, like here

I had this problem a while ago. Maybe you should look into some real GIS software like FWTools? Needless to say, it's much more complicated than Google Earth, and you need to be able to find OGR files of the cities. I found some nice 600Mb datasets of european urban morphological zones at European Environment Agency but perhaps you're looking for other places?

a-f, i tried to look up those datasets but failed miserably, could you point me where i should look? I'm trying to get a decent map of Paris.

I found it out already myself. For anybody interested:

http://dataservice.eea.europa.eu/dataservice/metadetails.asp?id=995

it's a map of european urban zones, so not on neighbourhood level as i was hoping. More detailed maps (1:20 000) can be found on the following website:
