Totally irrelevant/useless trivia - The answer to the question I asked about the literal translation is "I Like Strawberry/ies." The funny back story I got from my "tour guide" is that the client's wife's nickname is "strawberry" and the client's nickname is "watermelon". Hence the cartoon characters and strange strawberry-like forms all over the building. I generally don't like gimmicky things like that, but its for kids, and they seem to enjoy it.
huh, odd. when i first saw that project (and still a little now), i really didn't understand what it was all about. looks like it was fun to design, tho.
any takers on mine? holz I was worried you'd get it right away. very recently completed.
ahh i gave away too much info. it's the aptly named "holzlagerplatzuberdachung"
their site I like a lot of their work. I was able to meet with them while traveling through the area and they have a really interesting and effective way of selling their projects, both to clients and users... and seem like a really funny group of guys.
wax- that was a clue to the first project that i fudged up posting...
but i'll let you have it. it's the s'klallam tribal center. just finished up a few weeks ago. not all that impressed, though (as with all the cutler projects i've been to, with the exception of the capitol hill library)
i used this as a local library a few years ago and enjoyed it.
the add/remo is competent miller hull and extends/plays on what thiry set up 50 years earlier.
save the concrete panels with exposed shell, the original thiry building could be built in seattle today and pass as contemporary. it's an unusual thiry work in terms of scale and style (thiry did some whacky stuff). it would probably make more sense in kirk's portfolio. i believe a kirk project sits across the street from the library (the uni. church).
yeah, my biggest issues w/ the miller hull addition are the poor lighting inside and the layout doesn't work well, but that is probably more spl trying to maximize their space.
NK'MIP desert cultural centre in Osoyoos, BC.
by Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden Architects which i need to get out and see, having a bit of a fetish and some experience w/ rammed earth.
Seabird Island School, Patkau
sk'aadgaa naay elementary school
acton ostry architects
First Nations garden pavilion, Saucier et perrotte
holz.box, yes...I grew up on the peninsula, right by Port Gamble. I was trying to find images of the new(ish) school over at Pascal Sherman (Colville Confed. Tribes) but can't come up with any good ones.
i know this building, I even know what its used for - I thought it might of been OSKA but couldn't find the project on their website. I even seen it published fairly recently - with some full page spreads
holz.box--ha, I can't believe you consider that rural...We were just in Poulsbo visiting my aunt, and I was all "who the #$*&! are all these people, and what are they doing here!?!" My parents now live in Okanogan...that's more like rural to me.
Name that Architect and Building!!!
next
I'm guessing they separated.

minsuk cho broke off and formed mass studies
phuyaka, i have no idea on that project, detailing looks germanic but form threw me for a loop.
ah ok that makes sense.
the firm is a young Austrian (Wien) firm with a fair amount of built work.
alles wird gut?

hey, that's paul thiry's north east brach library - recently remodeled (poorly) by miller|hull.
thoughts on the remodel waxwings?
i'm drawn more to kirk and lovett's projects over thiry.
dearborn massar's collection @ UW to see more
Damn, I went through all the coastal tribes I could think of, including all the variations on Salish I could come up with, holz.box.
i used this as a local library a few years ago and enjoyed it.

great game!
whoa. impressive. how long did that take?
it's a small tribe, maybe 400 and the area of their reservation os very small. they are part of the salish, though.
yeah, my biggest issues w/ the miller hull addition are the poor lighting inside and the layout doesn't work well, but that is probably more spl trying to maximize their space.
the unitarian church is across the street.
cutler's residential version (long res) of the post and beam used above
are there any good tribal centers? the one's i've looked at seem to get lost in charactery.
waxing you going to add your image or what? Some of us are anxious to actually name a building
other indian projects of note i can think of:
NK'MIP desert cultural centre in Osoyoos, BC.

Seabird Island School, Patkau

waxwings. you located in seattle?
yep, seatown
isnt holz up? he quickly dispatched with the thiry project
holz.box, yes...I grew up on the peninsula, right by Port Gamble. I was trying to find images of the new(ish) school over at Pascal Sherman (Colville Confed. Tribes) but can't come up with any good ones.
hmmm.
ok, relatively new project. looks like an interesting place to live. should be easy.
whoa, snjr. what was that like? way to rural for me. even seattle feels too small these days.
i know this building, I even know what its used for - I thought it might of been OSKA but couldn't find the project on their website. I even seen it published fairly recently - with some full page spreads
wrong continent, architechnophilia...
Any hints>
sure...
it's swiss and related to darwin
Camenzid Evolution
Seewurfel
didnt get the easy part
yep. it's a really intriguing project.
it's nice. is that a parklex rainscreen? some of it is over the top.
current post: bldg must be six years of age or so and it's ~4500 miles from zurich. firm no longer exists.
Is that a construction photo ?
product called OKAVENEER by okalux.
20mm-thick timber/glass panels made from two layers of semi-toughened glass, wood is a veneer (3 differing species) over mdf.
no clue on the building. russian?
pic is of the final product and it's not in russia
same place
same now defunct firm
older project:
The fenestration looks like Looey Kahn. Philadelphia ?
i know that's clark and menefee, been there and a great building.. so i'm guessing their aquarium?
wg studied under kahn, and kahn's office was full so he got to work w/ kahn's best student... one robert venturi til kahn had space.
then kahn died.
or so the story as was told to me.
waxwings, you from VA?!?
that's it. it is a great building with curating to match. some detailing suffered at the contractor's hand.
figured the middleton inn image would help (the first is a cover image from a book on c&m).
no not from VA, but i've roamed the south.
middleton inn rocks. i love that place...
wg clark is still teaching at UVA. a friend from undergrad TA'd one of his studios last semester.
