Thanks Orhan. Love that anecdote. Am reminded of Schindler's inspiration, in a Yosemite camp, for the feel of the King's Road house (backed into the darkness, opening to the light, yada yada).
These secondary and tertiary LA pioneers need all the airing they can get, while their fragile (?) monuments remain intact. Where's Esther McCoy Jr when we need her ?
usonian for sure... let's start with the primary frank. but they don't look like his kind of curves...
side bar esther mcCoy story;
as was looking for architecture school to go to, i ve met ms. mcCoy and lit her cigarette outside of a conference hall. long story short she said to me, "there is a new school called sci arc and you should go there and ask for ray kappe and tell him esther mcCoy sent you."
the rest was history and she and i became sort of friends whenever i would see her in the lectures we would stay outside and smoke cigarettes. she eventually died from smoking. god bless her. she was such a youthful person and fun to talk to.
otherwise i was going to study film.
i am little bit like forest gump with all these interesting people i ran into as a young kid. i met anthropologist claude lévi-strauss too!
Hmm -- we should follow you around. I hope you'll consent to be interviewed at some point re Ms McCoy -- lucky interviewer.
I like these CD clues I wonder if the architect above granted a client's wish for a Hollywood pool -- or was that his own idea. You're right about Wright, there, but the arcs are a Wrightian influence, perhaps -- the only ellipses in his work are seen in perspective !
could be Croat eh? So its likely he's from Slovenia, Bosnia, or any of the other Balkan states. Hmmm ok. The work could be Dekleva Gregoric looks more aged.
I remember seeing this one on coolhunting.com, but that's pretty much all that I know about it. It looks rather british, but according to the license plates on the cars, it's somewhere in the USA...
glad to see people posting again, hopefully this is a second wind. though with spaceinvading.com now up, it'll be hard to find projects people haven't seen.
Do a picture book -- then all you need is captions. In small type on the back of the title page it can say "captions ghost-written by. . ." How cool is that ?
Name that Architect and Building!!!
love that steel joinery

Shall I ?
Okay, I'll take pity. . .

SDR it looks like an early Goff
I see the resemblance. Two hints: the house is currently for sale, and there is a Wright connection. . .
. . .and there has already been a hint at the location.
OK -- zip. Gantvoort house, John Lautner, Flintridge, CA, 1949.
Anybody hot ? Git it up.
he could be croatian, but he isnt....

Or, he could be of Croatian decent and working/living somewhere completely different - maybe in a chillier environment...
wow colder than Croatia, hmmm well it lacks the delicacy of Switzerland so Austria then.
our collective archinect new years resolution should be to keep this thread on the front page at all times.
any other hints diabase?
Its definitely a 'Chile-er' environment. And the architect is quite Radic-al...
ha. smilj, you're on candid camera
as somewhat mentioned above, Smiljan Radic, Casa Nercon (or is it Copper 1)
here is something new:
phuyaka, since that was the first post of '09, let's see if we can get that new years resolution going!
cheers!

is it polshek w/ landscaping by martha schwartz?
not polshek...but, also a very well known architect...
usernametaken has provided a couple of good hints as well...
grimshaw - RPI's performing arts center
that building is massive.

the next:
there is a lot of great concrete in this thread...love it...
swiss!? and is that a bell at the entry?!
yes, it's swiss. ticino. botta's father, basically.
first name similar to a roman ruler...
aaah, galfetti
if i had access to a decent arch library, i think we'd have better projects than spaceinvading...
indeed holz.
?
Neat shot. Crazy masonry, cool convoluted reflection. . .
very true holz. one of these days i'll try and get a part time job at urban center books. but i can see that leading to excessive spending.
interesting building cowgill, have any other images?
my mind immediately went to dali for some reason...spain!?
or is it some italian allegory!?
paging cowgill
word
images coming... when i get home in a few hours.
josé pleçnik (is that how the accents go? I can never remember), national and university library, ljubljana.
i think. from that angle I can't tell how the column tapers...
buying books cannot be excessive. And with your widespread knowledge holz AND phuyake you should be writing your own.
thats what i tell myself when i've maxed out my credit card at amazon again, atp.
atp,
my writing skillz are horrid.
but there are several books i've proposed writing. two were shot down by printers. so maybe i go the publish it yourself route...
i'll ghostwrite for you, holz.
Do a picture book -- then all you need is captions. In small type on the back of the title page it can say "captions ghost-written by. . ." How cool is that ?
just as long as i don't have to pay you!
perhaps we can come to some agreement. i work for books...
Now I'm confused. Wait -- is this a circle-jerk ?
I can write, I'm just not too keen on research, fact checking, reading, spelling, or grammar. Lets make it a coloring book.
agfa8x = bingo!
