good guess, but it's not craig ellwood. i'll give you another hint: there are a couple of other iconic buildings by the same architect in this desert city of southern california (a mecca for modern architecture).
yeah, your last clue tipped me off. i remembered the cover of architecture magazine some years back was on the "arizona school", and ibarra rosano was one of the featured practices. they do some pretty nice work.
As I’ve gotten older, much to the dismay of some of my studio brethren, I’ve come to appreciate holl even more.
maybe because I’m moving more in his direction than the completely rational stuff I’ve notoriously been pumping out, and this seems ok to me.
Some of his offspring seem to be doing rather well.
I really like Berman’s work, and BSC definitely have some good things going. However, I don’t know if holl, or anyone for that matter, will produce successful offspring quite like OMA has. It’s a machine, fo sho.
And yeah, epileptics need not apply.
It’s in Europe, but not an EU member, if that helps.
yea a-techno, down in Dumbo with all of the other cool brooklyn firms. I forgot to add their URL to the link above: BSC
agree with holz.. I am and have always been a fan of the majprity of Holl's word. Paralax is a great book I revisit every few months, and questions of perception is also a good read that I honestly find very inspiring.
there, i said it.
i'm not a recent convert. while i enjoy parallax and throw out the phenomenal lens bs every once-in a while, i think holl is a horrible speaker. his work really doesn't phtograph too well. but having been to several projects now (kiasma, saarphistraat, BAM (yech) & st. ignatius) i'm coming around to it. so much so that everytime i see he's hiring, i'm half tempted. but the SO says no to NYC and has veto power. not that it would happen anyway, but one can always dream (big)
Name that Architect and Building!!!
or mocoloco
Casa Ómnibus, Gubbins Arquitectos
i'll come up with one in a minute. in the meantime, anybody got one ready?
Is Gubbins a common Chilean surname?!
I'll go:
ha ha, is there even a building in that photo?
oh yes, i see the window frames in the lower right corner.
coop himmelb(l)au? that's all i see
Same building - daytime.
hotel remota
german del sol
excellent - I knew a daytime picture would give it away. German del Sol has some pretty amazing work...
hmmmm... his page seems to be having trouble loading...
anyway, yeah, there is a lot of good stuff coming from south america! i like it.
I'll go
hmmmmm... this one doesn't seem south american. feels more tropical.
making a guess or just fishing?
haha, i guess i was just fishing.
i'm going to guess that it is in africa or australia.
i like the juxtaposition of the cheap materials w/ the mies chairs.
any more clues atp? i think we're all stumped.
its neither South American nor Australian...
so... it is african?
lol its not African either. It is actually in the US... their work was featured in this book
and most of their work is eclectic, modern and done in the desert
aha! thanks for the last clue.
ibarra rosano residence and studio by same.
the roof of that project reminded me of this other american desert residence:
this image will probably give it away:
and i couldn't link from flickr for some reason so no cheating!
Too easy. . .for a change ! But I got no follow-up, so somebody take it. . .
hmmm its almost the end of play, let's see if I can blind guess this...Craig Ellwood?
and Dead that was a spot on guess...I was worried no one would get it

ibarra rosano's house is also the cover of this book
well since no one got it yet... albert frey's house in palm springs. give me a few to find another.
next.... this might be tricky, it's a very new project by a very new firm I have a feeling will be one to watch:
wow. i have no idea what it is, but it's awesome.
firm consists of disciples from Holl
yeah, the vaulted ceiling (especially in the middle photograph) reminds me of holl's work, st. ignatius in particular.
andrew berman
Vesa Honkonen
Christian Wassmann
??
or AGWA?
close close close but nay. project on the left coast firm on the right. also on site as part of the "compound" is this Turrell:
holz I didn't know those guys...soon they'll have a legacy OMA would be proud to have
yeah, it's nice work.
the principals (3) also have backgrounds with Gluckman Mayner + Williams & Tsien
ah, bsc architecture's art cave
next up:
kupfer galore
yup, BSC it is. They were just hiring, I was very, very tempted to update my portfolio and give it a shot but alas.. complacency wins.
yowza holz.. epileptics need not apply as stage hands... very interesting
ahh so its likely a NYC practice eh?

parallax is one of the first architecture monographs that i got into.

oh, and the project i posted is in switzerland... that copper would get stolen by all the methheads & tweakers here in the NW.
I knew I had seen that interior...
Muller Sigrist in Amriswil (where ever that is)
